Everyone has a reason for taking trips away in their caravan, leisure, rallying, sporting interests, fishing, or other hobby related excuses but do any other caravanners have a reason to match ours?

For a number of years we have caravanned regularly with two other couples, we have formed our own organisation with A.G.M,.s, daily site meetings and club banner ( sad you’re thinking I know ). The reason we meet is purely social, we all originally lived in the same town in Hertfordshire when our children were small. Now we are all grandparents, and live some distance apart and use our vans to meet up. Weekends usually begin in a local pub, the daytimes we do our own thing and gather again each evening for a safari supper, that is one course in each van.

Over the years our A.G.M. has set the theme for the following years trip. We began with “Men Cooking” just to prove the males in our group could extend their skills beyond the barbecue. Each man cooking one course on a rota, until each had provided an entire meal albeit in three trips away-starter, main and pud, each in a different van.

Among the most memorable was a Turkey and Tinsel evening complete with fairy lights, crackers and carols. The highlight of the evening was a three bird roast - turkey stuffed with chicken, stuffed with pheasant and all created on site. As we held that event on a club site in September we had quite an audience to the festivities. I’m pleased to say that the only comments were positive to the point where one neighbour said his children were desperate to join in.

We have held European themes, celebrating cuisine from Italy, Spain and France, U.K. evenings and murder mystery dinners complete with full costume. Neighbours delighted in our show of insanity as we moved between vans in full costume regalia, taking and offering to take photographs.

Our next theme is, topically, the Olympics to be held near Much Wenlock birthplace of the modern Olympics. We shall of course be entering teams in a variety of sporting events. So give us a wave if you see six ageing caravanners in singlet and shorts staggering between caravans.
