Postcard from Verdon

The Lac du Sainte Croix was created in the early seventies by the damming of the Verdon river and the flooding of the valley below the Grand Canyon du Verdon. The chalk suspended in the water scatters the sunlight to give the lake its pale turquoise hue. The scenery in the Pays du Verdon is spectacular.

We stopped for one night in the village of  Aiguines, high above the lake. We then drove down to the lakeside to Les Salles sur Verdon and Camping De la Source ( the original village is now submerged). The shingle beach is just 25 metres from the site gate and so we were able to take our chairs down to sit in the shade of the trees and to have a cooling swim. We also went down in the evening to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun going down.

On Sunday, we moved on another 8 miles to Moustiers Sainte-Marie. It’s a twee, touristy little village with a chapel perched on a rock higher up the gorge.

Yesterday we drove through the Grand Canyon to Castellane which also has a chapel perched on a rock high above the village. (Napoleon passed through here on his 100 day comeback tour having escaped from Elba). The views en route were spectacular, but deserves the driver’s full attention! The road was very busy and we didn’t find anywhere to stop in our motorhome until we got to Pont Sublime.
