Cherry Hinton Chicanes

This story happened on: 14/03/2012

On my first ever caravan trip, from Norfolk to the Cotswolds, I decided to go in stages, to get used to towing, and living in a caravan. My first stop was Cambridge Cherry Hinton.  I took the A11, and then turned off onto the A14, signposted Cambridge- all well so far.  On the map, the CC site was on Limekiln Road, on the far side of Cherry Hinton. So, I turned off at the signpost to the village. I found to my great concern that since I had last been to Cherry Hinton, a few years before, the High Street had been littered with traffic calming measures, especially with wide islands restricting the road width. Once I had negotiated the first one, I realised I was forced to continue, as there was nowhere to turn off, and I was hopeless at reversing. By the time I had got to the far end of the High Street, I was a nervous wreck- more by luck than anything else I had not damaged the caravan.  Yes, the CC handbook did have a warning, but I couldn’t stop to check where to turn off to avoid the High Street. Ever since then, I have continued on the A11 past the A14 turning, and taken the Fulbourn turn, which takes you straight to the junction at the end of the High Street without problems.

Hi, I  Will be going there in June so think i will need to pay attention to directions. Like you i will be travelling down A1 and then onto A14 so hope the site instructions are clear or would you suggest following your suggestion via Fulbern turn.? Thanks for the update. cheers.

I personally find the Fulbourn turn best- there are other more complicated routes, but whichever way you chose, the CC advises against the direct route through Cherry Hinton village, because of the amount of traffic calming stuff which could damage your van.
