Get back to nature at Cambridge Cherry Hinton

This story happened on: 02/03/2012

When I go on a caravan trip to the Cotswolds and back, if I am not in a great hurry I usually stop off at Cambridge Cherry Hinton CC site on the way there or the way back (the other good place to stop off to/from East Anglia is Ashwell Ashridge Farm CC site). Cherry Hinton is a really quirky place, as it is literally laid out inside a former quarry, which is now a nature reserve. The site has lots of different levels, and cul-de-sac areas laid out as pitches. I try to get a hardstanding pitch at the top of the quarry, as it is quite sunny there. The toilet/shower block was refurbished totally in 2010, so it is very well appointed. When I was having my breakfast one morning, a cheeky robin hopped into the open doorway of my caravan, after crumbs from the toast. I then fed it crumbs regularly. There are lots of rabbits hopping around the site, too- they must get rather hungry, as when I came to coil up my television booster cable, I found that they had nibbled the pvc cover, and nearly through the wire grid underneath! I'm glad they left the electric hookup cable well alone. The wardens were surprised, as no-one had reported booster cable nibbling before. As well as a nature trail and dog walk around the site, across the road is a much, much larger former quarry, which is also a nature reserve, and is open for dog walkers who want much longer walks for their pets, too.

I've just got back from another 4 days at Cherry Hinton, on one of my favourite pitches at the top of the site- robins and other birds fearlessly hopping around the van, the rabbits didn't nibble the tv cable this time, thank goodness... but best of all looking out of my caravan rear window I saw a tiny mouse or vole scampering around the branches of a large wild rose bush!
