Our perfect site

This story happened on: 28/02/2012

New to the site and fairly new to caravanning, although always used to holiday in our caravan with my Parents and brother from being a young child up to the age of 18. Slightly older now, but loving having got back into it. We discovered a site called 'Hillside' in the hamlet of Knayton, 4 miles from Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Beautifully located, amidst rolling hills and country lanes (easily accessible with a caravan, lots of plassing places). There are currently 37 pitches, all with grass and hardstanding and individual fresh and waste water, electricity and sky tv piped in. The shower blocks and toilets are always immaculate and under floor heating is a real bonus, especially in minus 8 conditions, as we discovered in February half term. Wifi is also available at a reasonable rate and the laundry room provides washing machine and tumble drier, including ironing facilities. Excellent for me, as my Family think I was put on this Earth to wash and iron! There is a park/play area for children, which is decked out in wood, so blends in with the surroundings. It is also far enough away from the pitches, so you can still enjoy the peace and quiet of the site. Plenty of dog walks around and about and an abundance of English Heritage sites nearby, most of which allow dogs. You can also take advantage of the caravan/motorhome storage facilities, for as little as a week. Alternatively, you can leave your outfit on pitch for a small fee and return for a few days at a time. It is the perfect 'get away from it all' site, but the children usually find other friends to play with, so everybody is happy. The village pub 'The Dog and Gun' is open every evening and also does Sunday Lunch. The food is average, but the atmosphere is great and there tends to be other families with children, dogs allowed too. It's within walking distance of the site too. Thirsk also has a large Tesco's for provisions and plenty of coffee places and craft shops. The Black Lion on the Market Square does excellent food and is beautifully decorated inside, mainly frequented by locals, so an indication that it's consistenetly good. Because I'm rubbish at adding links etc, the website is just called 'Hillside Caravan site'. There is also a CL, run by the owner's Mother. Although the facilities of the site are not open to CL users (mainly showers/toilet) the CL is still worthy of a visit and again beautifully located. We are putting our caravan into storage at Hillside, with the intention of spending as many weekends away as possible. It is only 42 miles from our home in Ilkley, west Yorks, so ideal for a quick getaway, to somewhere that feels a million miles away.....
