A quiet corner of Cornwall

We have been going to a wonderful site (only 25 pitches, but good large ones) in Cornwall now for many years for our summer holiday trip and as we always go around the same time at the end of July or early August, we keep meeting many of the same people there, who have become good friends. It isn't a CC site but I think you will see from the photos what attracts us to it. The first two pictures show the view looking forwards, and the second one shows the view from the rear of the van. If you book early enough you get to book your favourite pitch for your stay, as long as it is still available!

It is on top of a hill, a good mile beyond Portscatho (near St Mawes), so this can lead to some rather windy conditions sometimes, but we love it, and the company we always seem to meet there! We find the Roseland area to be a generally relatively quiet area of Cornwall, even at the height of the summer peak season. Even our favourite beach (Towan Beach) never gets very busy, and there is a well maintained toilet block (by the National Trust) there as well.

We find this a wonderful relaxing place to be, and have had many evening barbeques down on the beach to which all our friends on site are usually invited. We often end up with 12 to 20 people at these events! My idea of a beach bbq is to just take a bag of lumpwood charcoal, some lighting fluid, a couple of grilles, and some barbeque tools. Everyone is tasked with finding a good selection of flat stones, we dig a shallow trench in the sand, and then build a bbq right there, and lay the grilles on top to put the food on!

Once it is going well everyone cooks their food. By this time the wine and beers are all being shared around and a great time is had by all! It is usually dark by the time we are all packing up to get back to site and this is often a cause of great amusement in itself!

From this base we get out to visit things such as the Bodmin and Wenford steam railway (well, if there's a steam railway, it just has to be visited! It doesn't matter where in the country we are!), and of course the Eden Project!

Also one of the best things as far as I am concerned is the large paddock adjoining the pitches area, which is also part of the site. This is used for kiteflying (did I mention the wind?! ... and did you see my story on Exmouth Kite Festival?), as well as for kids to run around etc. this is one of the best family oriented sites I know in the area, the pitches are well spaced and kids have plenty of room.
