Start Bay, Devon. You just have to go!

This story happened on: 03/06/2021

We have just completed a very pleasant 3 week stay at Start Bay (May 2021).

Excellent wardens of course.

Here is the thing. It is beautiful and well worth the accolade of 'An Area Of Natural Beauty'. Slapton has  WW2 heritage, Slapton Ley is a nature reserve. BUY THE Ordnance Survey map and take some binoculars. Agatha Christie heritage. Washed away village.

We had pitch 62, with its own little oasis. Watch out for narrow lanes and the last 6 miles to the site is probably going to put me off going again. BUT, you absolutely must go to this site. The beaches are pebbles - it isn't a problem with a scruffy plastic sheet (you dont care about) under your good blankets on the beach.

Pubs are great, although expect long service times (buy what you need, all together, once?). Visits to the local towns and villages are a must. I could list them off but you are better exploring.

You can even get to Plymouth or Paignton in less than an hour (not for me). Although we did go into Dartmouth, and another day in Paignton on rainy days.

It's not really a site for kids, although there is the Field Centre at Slapton. You might be better at the Brixham site, unless your kids are into nature and walking.

We love it down there too, usually at the other site in Slapton itself but the CAMC site gives access to the southern part of the local coast path so must give it a go at some point. smile
