New Zealand on a Tight Budget Day 12

This story happened on: 26/02/2017

I realise I've somewhat neglected the Campsite Creature feature on this trip. Well after the enterprising rat of the previous night, last night we had Rino the goat! I should mention this is a delightfully quirky site with some nice takes on the ubiquitous cabin. The Boat/House and best of all the VW splitty campervan!. Our cheerful young host was cleaning one this morning with his baby in a pushchair looking on. I wish him every success and with the building of a new marina next door I'm sure he will do very well!

Today we drove to Lake Rotopounamu and did a delightful two hour circuit passing through beautiful varied forest with glimpses of water and mountains. At the furthest point we stopped for a swim and saw only a few other parties of people all the time we were there. We've noticed that the sound of the Weta crickets intensifies at a certain point - possibly determined by increased light levels - it was positively deafening at one point. We then drove through increasingly volcanic landscapes towards the Tongariro National Park with fine views of the volcanic slopes venting away.
On arrival at Whakapapa village we were greeted by the sight of Tongariro Chateau. How, I would like to know, did they ever get permission to build such and enormous and inappropriate monstrosity in such a prominent location. I almost think Donald Trump must be behind it, and where is the excuse when we saw so many fine examples of grand architecture in the American national parks. you only have to look at the work of Mary Coulter to see what is possible. Fortunately the camp site is on the other side of the road (n the Lahar path) next to a babbling stream. We spent the later part of the afternoon doing some much needed house keeping! Campsite creatures are midges :-(
