New Zealand on a Very Tight Budget Day 17

This story happened on: 24/02/2017

We left the campsite and drove south through unremarkable countryside to the pleasant town of Whanganui which had nice shops and buildings. Our first stop was at the weird elevator built in 1917 which you reach by walking 200 metres down a tunnel into the middle of Drury's Hill. you press a button and after some clanking and banging a door opens and a lady relieves you of $2 each and you take the rather scary ride up through the hill. then 175 steps up the war memorial tower and you get a great view.
After that we visited Cooks Park which holds the running track where Peter Snell broke Bannister's 4 minute mile record back in the 60s and also a rather nice wooden open air velodrome.
We had lunch at the Cameron Block House built as a stronghold against the advancing Maoris in the 1860s and visited the beach and rather odd windmill at Foxton before settling at the old scout camp now camp site and wedding venue.
