Modbury Tales

You are always guaranteed a friendly welcome from Richard, Debbie and Bailey at the somewhat overlooked Modbury Caravan and Motorhome Club site. Situated in the beautiful South Devon countryside it is in close proximity to Dartmouth, Salcombe, Bigbury Bay, Plymouth, Dartmoor and a rugged coastline of steep cliffs and sandy beaches. I recently spent the summer on a ‘seasonal pitch’ at the Modbury site and it is an ideal way to explore an area in a leisurely way by taking advantage of good weather and less busy weekdays. I enjoyed it so much that I sent regular travelogues to a few friends and then to more friends until in the end I published an eBook entitled ‘Modbury Tales’.

The narrow lanes never cease to amaze because they are virtually impossible to navigate and yet hidden away people live on a permanent basis, like the lost tribes of the Amazonian rainforest. Elsewhere in the country the very wealthy buy large estates so that they can be far away from other people but here in South Devon nobody could ever find you even if they tried, including close friends.

Clearly the tangle of lanes are not made for motorhome and caravans that stay on site but ideal places to explore by bike, moped or car. There are two footpaths leading directly from the site, one to California Cross where you can find the California Inn, a petrol station and a Spar store, and the other to Modbury itself that takes about one hour via the rolling Devon countryside. Modbury is an attractive little town that has a Co-op store, an art gallery, post office, a first class butcher, other interesting shops and most importantly, three pubs. And so if you are looking for a relaxed location for next summer why not try Modbury.
