Problem in the Calais Aire

This story happened on: 24/04/2012

Last week we stayed overnight at the Aire in Calais (opposite the ferry port) and when we set off the next day and joined the motorway towards Belgium, we were startled to hear strange noises coming from our rear wheels.  We stopped as soon as possible and realised that our back wheel nuts on the motorhome were all loose and one had come out - stolen or dropped out.  As we'd driven from Portsmouth to Dover the day before and had no problems, it must have happened in Calais.  We'd reccomend you check yours before you go if you stay in an Aire in Calais.  Thankfully we came to no harm, but we had to find a Fiat dealer pretty quick!  On our way to Slovenia, hope there are no more problems!

why did you spend the night in calais and in an Aire? what did you expect would happen? either drive further on and stop (in a pay section ideally) or better still spend one night in a proper secure site. while I don't belive half these people who say were 'gassed' in their vans more likeley just over tired and leave windows open) it is sensible to take a few precautions especially around calais.

we,ve stayed here quite a few times - it's an organised aire for motorhomes next to the main campsite and always has at least 40-50 vans.  This is the first time we've had a problem, and the police regularly patrol the area too - luckily we had no other problems on our extended holiday in Eastern Europe!
