Frequently asked questions

Call our helpline on 0800 051 5318

(Phone lines open Mon-Fri 8am to 9pm; Sat 9am to 5pm; Sun 10am to 5pm. Calls may be recorded.)

  • Is my caravan or trailer covered as standard on my European breakdown policy?

There is an additional premium for this as it is not covered as standard. When you get a quote for the MAYDAY European Breakdown policy, provided by Green Flag, you will be asked if you want to cover your standard caravan or trailer.  If you have opted to cover your caravan or trailer, then this will show on your Insurance Plan document that will arrive with your welcome pack once you have taken out your policy. To see an overview of the cover that this policy provides, please click here.

  • Can I cover a vehicle of any size, age or weight?

Some limits apply to MAYDAY European Breakdown policy which are detailed under the definition of “Insured vehicle”. You can get cover for a vehicle that’s under 16 years old and is up to:

    • A weight of 4.25 metric tonnes (4,250 kg), including any load being carried.
    • A height of 3 metres and a width of 2.55 metres.
    • A length of 7 metres (apart from a tow bar or coupling device).

If you tell us you are towing and have paid the additional premium for this, any standard caravan or trailer will be covered if it breaks down provided it is being towed by the insured vehicle. The caravan or trailer must be connected using an ordinary 50mm towball and can’t be bigger than the sizes above.

  • What countries does MAYDAY European Breakdown cover?

Your MAYDAY European Breakdown policy provides cover in the following countries:

France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Andorra, Austria, Balearics, Bulgaria, Canary Isles, Corsica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Sardinia, Sicily, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey in Europe plus Üsküdar, and the Republic of Ireland.

  • With my MAYDAY European Breakdown policy, do I get cover in any vehicle I am driving when in Europe?

No, the only vehicle that you are covered for with your MAYDAY European Breakdown policy is the one you have told us about and we have agreed to cover. This vehicle, and the cover you have chosen, will be shown on your Insurance Plan when you receive your welcome pack once you have taken out the policy.

  • Are there any cover restrictions on how long I spend in Europe with an annual MAYDAY European breakdown policy?

Yes. If you’ve chosen an annual policy, you’ll have up to 90 days of cover to use across a 12-month period. You can use your cover across as many trips as you like, as long as no single trip is over 30 days.

  • How can I renew my Annual European Breakdown policy?

If you have an annual MAYDAY European Breakdown policy, there is no renewal process so it will end on the date shown on your Insurance Plan. If you want to be covered for another year, you will need to take out a new MAYDAY European Breakdown policy. To get a quote call 0800 051 5318.

  • What if I just want to get European Breakdown cover for one trip?

That's fine. You can opt for single trip cover - just tell us the start and end dates of your trip when you call us on 0800 051 5318 for a quote. Your start and end dates will show on your Insurance Plan that is sent out with your welcome pack when you take out a policy.

Alternatively, an annual policy can cover you for 12 months of trips from the start date you choose.

  • Are there any other restrictions on the type of vehicle you will cover?

Any vehicle that’s covered must be privately owned and registered in the UK, and meet any legal requirements and driving laws that apply at the time of the breakdown. This includes having valid tax, MOT, and insurance.

These details may be checked when you take out a policy, and it will be checked at the time of any breakdown when you ask for help.

If you have paid the additional premium to cover your caravan or trailer, this must be of a standard make and when it breaks down, is being towed by the vehicle on cover. It must be connected using an ordinary 50mm towball and can’t be bigger than the sizes noted in your policy wording and Insurance Plan.

Please note that MAYDAY European Breakdown is unable to provide cover for a 5th Wheeler.

  • I’m towing a car – will that be covered?

If you’re towing a car, this won’t be covered by your MAYDAY European breakdown policy. If you want the car you are towing to be covered, you will need to take out separate breakdown cover.

  • I have a MAYDAY UK Breakdown policy – is European cover the same?

No, the MAYDAY European breakdown cover is a separate policy to MAYDAY UK and has different terms and conditions. Please check that the cover is suitable for your needs.
