Overnight stay but will return.

Royal Oak Inn
We stayed at this cl for one night on our trip further north. Water and electric on pitch, did not use the grey waste facility so cannot comment. Very quiet spot overnight. Welcoming host, arrived too late to eat at pub but very busy so obviously popular on a Sunday. Easy walk into Monmouth (downhill) but harder on way back. Great views from pitch over countryside and for wildlife watching. Would definitely return and stay for longer as a base to visit the wider area.

Great for the night

Royal Oak Inn
We booked because we wanted a CL near a pub! Most level pitch we’ve ever had, great view over the valley, water and electric on the pitch. Dinner in the pub was reasonable and the atmosphere was good. Would benefit from some tidying and updating.

Basic but did the job

Royal Oak Inn
We booked a last minute trip here. It was reasonably priced and easy to find, although campsite was not signposted (to left hand side of the pub through the car park) No body greeted us so we just went into the pub to pay. There re 5 pitches in total which are all side by side and have their own electric and water station. Waste water and chemical waste are located up by the patio by the pub. There is a tap next to this to rinse out waste but is close to the tables outside so choose a quiet time to empty it lol There is a play area at the pub which had a trampoline, swing, slide, goal, climbing frames. All functional but old - our kids loved it. Only thing was you couldn't see the play area from the caravan as there is a hedge in between (good for some people though) The views were lovely and there are two donkeys and two sheep in the field by the caravans. Hardstanding pitches which are spacious for awning and car, there is grass to the sides as well. All in all this is a great place for walks, discovering the local Monmouth forest of dean area. We didn't use the pub but they have home cooked meals. Basic but functional. Some tlc needed in the areas around the side which are abit of a dumping ground. Maybe some more signage for the caravan pitches with info would also be great. Thank u for having us though we had a blast

Room for improvement

Royal Oak Inn
On a positive note there is much to commend the site. Quiet, Good views, Hard Standing, Sheltered from prevailing weather, tap to every pitch, public footpath across the fields in 20 meters, good TV and phone signal, and good reasonably priced food in the pub. However, it is let down by lack of signage both from the road and zero onsite information. Access is through the pub car park although you don't know this from the road. There are no recycling instructions - just 2 green bins. We eventually found the chemical disposal point in the pub garden with no screening from the tables. We were glad no one was eating out there when we used it. Also no water supply for toilet rinsing in reach of the chemical disposal point so the waste tank has to be carried to the tap and back again. There is a sign on the chemical disposal which says 'waste water' but it would be impractical to drag a full container up there and lift it up to empty it. The site is untidy with weeds growing in the hardstanding and the field is overgrown. Has the feel of somewhere that could be very nice with a bit of TLC. For £15 per night we have stayed in much nicer surroundings.
