Club Magazine used to send us unwanted junkmail

Really ,really annoying -

Open up the club magazine and  each month it appears to contain more and more unwanted junk mail.more than usual this month  including one from Friends of the Earth (in its own additional envelope)   one for funeral sevices  and the now regular 'drink yourself silly ' with our giant  selection box of wines (obviously in  'advertiser speak'  this junk mail is targeted at this typical magazine  reader profile type and age, US !)  -  Grrrrrrrrrrr  !!

Have otherwise registered with the mail preference system and the telephone preference system to try to  try reducing  unwanted junk mail and nuisance 'sales' calls .

I know you can opt to go 'paperless' but some of us actually like to have a magazine you can physically take to a quite place and read away from the virtual  interactive 'digital screen' world in our own space just for a while.

Why does the club decide that  the magazine is used as a  vehicle to send us annoyingly  useless  unwanted junk mail that  is 99,90%  NOT  Motorhome or Caravan related and will go straight into the paper recycle bin !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Recent media reports state :-

'Old ex company Cambridge Analytica bosses have been quietly working on establishing new corporate entities' !!!!

On the look out for new clients they probably would be  ideally qualified to assist in targeting the club's Hobby specific and or Demographic audience (and the targeting and profiling audiences in an extremely sophisticated way)

Towards shades of an Orwellian Society to come -,Scary stuff, hope not!  surprisedsurprisedsurprised

Anyone who lives in a bungalow or a single story home need not be scared of an advert for a stairlift...wink

Now, CK10, glad to see I’ve got you thinking. May I expand more.....

For direct mail, much use is made of postcodes, often down to street level. Marketing companies build data on typical behaviours, buying patterns, income etc based on what they know from factual history. Often an assumption is then made that households in the same postcode /street will have similar profiles. (And they often do). Hence, you as a non-buyer of product x may be targeted because you share a postcode (+ other characteristics) with several folk who have already purchased product x.

in the case of inserts in a magazine, it is even possible we don’t all get the same inserts, again depending on postcodes. In the case of CCMH magazine, we will all share various characteristics simply because we own caravans/MHs etc, so that would attract a certain targeting, but it could then be overlaid by other factors.

all this is no different to TV (have you noticed how the types of ad vary by programme and channel) and newspapers (Sun ads are very different to those in the Guardian).

hey ho, that’s enough. Except to say, ABM, but believe it or not, as late as the 1980s, many sorting offices still had licenced bars in them, let alone canteens. And I’ll now get a cuppa as suggested. I’m beginning to bore myself!

It's very Interesting to see how and on what basis these 'target selections' are based. (Thanks again IanTG)

I suppose if one company drops out because of 'low take up' there will always be 'another along in a minute' who will  always be keen and willing to be 'sold' this  system , give it a try and then commit a large slice of their newly alloted  annual advertising budget. Unfortunately the householder as a result  still continues  receiving  the latest versions of 're hashed' same type ads of the same stuff  from the next company with the same  assortment .  . Bit like shooting targets at the fun fair, perhaps,  another one pops up fresh ready to be shot at

At least that may explain why I must be getting all the funeral service special offers mixed in with all the other unrelated subjects at least that one is a very safe bet  (i.e. DEATH & TAXES)smilesmile

This  forum is  getting more informative than the Open University  for specialist subject study ( seriously though, its all going to my very young Grandson for adding to his background research  for  his wider subject environmental project, to make of it what he will  )

After all it is the next generation our Children and Grandchildren that I am sure will be capable of making  the best  choices for shaping their own 'sustainable'   futures,   (after inheriting the various consequences of our generation's past wisdom)  coolcool

Sick to the back teeth of the crap junk mail we get with the club magazine . Literally open it over the bin . Read a similiar topic about it with ‘the other caravanning club’ and they are taking measures to reduce it , i see we are sadly stuck with it with this club . Wish we could opt in if we want to receive it , but thats never gonna happen where there’s ££££s to be made , regardless of the environmental cost
