Mayday and Caravan Storage

Hi,

This is just a heads up for people who have Mayday breakdown cover and store their caravan at a storage site.

In my naivety, I always assumed that in the event of any issues with my car Mayday would pick me up, drop off my caravan at our storage site, which is about six miles from my home, and then take my car back to my home address, or a local garage. It turns out that this is not the case. Apparently they will take my car and van to my caravan storage site and then leave me there to my own devices. Alternatively, they will take me to my home address and then leave both my car and van there (not an option for me as the van won't fit on my drive}. The choice is yours, it's either one or the other.

This only came to light last year when one of our centre members had to use Mayday, and both their broken down car and caravan where deposited at their storage site. They then had to arrange for a garage to recover the car to their home address. On contacting the Caravan Club after the event they were given sympathy but told sorry, those are the conditions of Mayday membership.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Caravan Club and Mayday. I pay over £100 a year for their breakdown cover and it does seem a bit poor that onward recovery, especially where it is fairly local, is not provided. Does anybody know how Arrival or Britannia Rescue would deal with this situation?

Anyway, the main point of this post is just to highlight this issue for Club members who store their caravans at a storage site.  Fortunately I've never had to use Mayday's services, and yes, I have been naive in not reading the small print. Apparently it's on page 6 of the policy document!

Happy caravanning.

Likewise I have just read this. Now do I come back to Mayday or stay with RAC arrival who offered this, unlike mayday who initially misinformed members about this storage issue. Well I can wait till April till I decide. It will be interesting if other members who defected to RAC return to mayday. Nice to see member power has some influence.

Good news! It looks like the Mayday/storage issue has been resolved.

I understand that from 5 November Mayday have introduced "Double Drop Off". This means if your car needs to be taken to your home or a local garage your caravan will be recovered to a storage site within a 75 mile radius of your home address.

The new arrangement is mentioned in the Nick Lomas column in the December club magazine.

I would like to thank David Smith at the Caravan Club for his efforts in getting this issue resolved.

Really pleased to hear this.  I did bring up the subject at the CAMC Council Meeting in April, after reading and contributing to this thread earlier on in the year.  It was referred on, and, not only is it great that it's been resolved, but it means that folk do listen and the system works.

Really good news as we also joined the C&CC and moved across to RAC Arrival.  They must have lost a significant number of subscribers to Mayday before waking up.  We are with RAC Arrival until April.

Next the CAMC need to resolve the Caravan Cover issue and the Online booking system.

Double page spread in this months mag about the new MAYDAY;s Double Drop Off so they will take van/trailer etc to storage site and vehicle to garage if within 75 miles of your home. We will see if anybody gets to use this and what there views are in the future.

No wonder it's so expensive.

We dumped the Caravan Cover preferring to have proper insurance cover even though it costs more.

As for the booking system I kept getting "Error" messages but it never indicated where the error was on the website.  I then found out that if you have a twin axle you need to phone is so it seems the CMC discriminate against those with twin axles?

Anyway glad that the Mayday issue has been sorted as we have found them to be excellent in the 13 years that we used them.  Prior to that we were with Green Flag for about 14 years.
