Mayday and Caravan Storage

Hi,

This is just a heads up for people who have Mayday breakdown cover and store their caravan at a storage site.

In my naivety, I always assumed that in the event of any issues with my car Mayday would pick me up, drop off my caravan at our storage site, which is about six miles from my home, and then take my car back to my home address, or a local garage. It turns out that this is not the case. Apparently they will take my car and van to my caravan storage site and then leave me there to my own devices. Alternatively, they will take me to my home address and then leave both my car and van there (not an option for me as the van won't fit on my drive}. The choice is yours, it's either one or the other.

This only came to light last year when one of our centre members had to use Mayday, and both their broken down car and caravan where deposited at their storage site. They then had to arrange for a garage to recover the car to their home address. On contacting the Caravan Club after the event they were given sympathy but told sorry, those are the conditions of Mayday membership.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Caravan Club and Mayday. I pay over £100 a year for their breakdown cover and it does seem a bit poor that onward recovery, especially where it is fairly local, is not provided. Does anybody know how Arrival or Britannia Rescue would deal with this situation?

Anyway, the main point of this post is just to highlight this issue for Club members who store their caravans at a storage site.  Fortunately I've never had to use Mayday's services, and yes, I have been naive in not reading the small print. Apparently it's on page 6 of the policy document!

Happy caravanning.

Ditto....but I do think it is a serious error on this club's management not to check out what the policy offers in terms of recovery and onward travel....I'm not privy to the stats, but I am fairly confident that a sizeable number of members keep their caravan in storage and will need this option.

Looking at Arrival via the ccc it does seem that it is covered

Thanks GTP.

I tried to have a look at their forum but it appears to be members only. Grateful if you could keep us updated with how Arrival would deal with this situation.

Stato, The thread on the other club 's forum appears to have stalled...only a couple of posts....

However, check out this link which gives comparison between Mayday and Arrival...I am told Arrival is slightly more expensive than Mayday and off course you have to be a member...

Interestingly,  half way down the 'what you get' list is the clause ..

Follow on recovery: We'll tow your caravan/trailer to a second location when "Recovery" purchased...

Assume you mean this link 'GTP'

https://www.rac.co.uk/breakdown-cover/caravanandmotorhome

and the quote: (Scroll down)

Arrival follow-on recovery: With Roadside & Recovery we’ll tow your caravan or trailer to a second destination, up to 75 miles from the vehicle.

So assume it means after they drop your car off at home or at the garage they will take the other vehicle to storage, or vice versa as long as both locations are within 75 miles of each other.

Thanks M. Although RAC is dearer at present you do get £15 back against C&CC membership or site fees.

I totted up the basic price plus the same cover for overseas plus my wife as an additional driver in her car and it amounted to something like £226 before the discount, that leaves me finding personal health insurance for the EU.

It fares well against Mayday/Greenflag at approx £122 in UK, plus Red Pennant at £280 for our trip overthere but does include personal health insurance.

Worth me thinking about.

What’s more, Metheven, the RAC are not averse to a bit of haggling, especially on renewal.

We have RAC Arrival through the other club and understand that they will recover both vehicles as long as they are less than 75 miles apart. To be sure we have AA cover through the bank and would use them if we were stuck at storage. As an aside we get discounts with AA at Moto services and lots of restaurants. Had much more back in discounts than the premium.
