We've just received our insurance renewal and decided to get a comparison quote from another insurer. It came in over £100 less than the club for exactly the same cover. When I rang the club to see if they could improve their quote a very unhelpful experience, all they did was put the price up even higher. Needless to say we've insured with Caravan Guard and saved ourselves a tidy sum for better cover.

We had standard cover on our two year old van. The club no longer looks after you if you are unfortunately involved in an accident. You have to pay for your recovery, mayday may help with this but not certain, and claim it back. The club MAY then pay for recovery. With CG this is included. There is up £1000 if the driver is unable to continue. You have a 10 % discount for gold storage, plus lots of other discounts for being a Club Member over a certain age etc. A major plus point that there is a UK 24/7 help line. When my wife called the Club the lady she spoke too was just outright rude and had a take it or leave it attitude. The lady at CG could not be nicer, after all she wanted the business and when all was arranged she told my wife we were the third Club members she had dealt with today, all had changed from the Club to them.

They wanted £2 more than CC for me, required a hitchlock that I do not need for CC (although I have one I don't wish to use it.) in both cases new for old which with CC is standard for van under 5 years old; but with caravan club I also have protected no claims.

I do not understand where you get this from. In an accident the caravan will be recovered under the caravan policy with the club. The one advantage that I see is the 24 hour helpline which the club should have.
Mayday covers you if the driver is unable to continue so we are covered there.
I have never had any problem with the club staff when I have spoken to them but did leave the insurance for a far cheaper quote for the same cover from C&CC.
Caravan Guard is with RSA and is secure but they wanted a hitchlock which is practically useless any way and wiped out the premium saving.
