Squealing When Braking

Hiya folks.

I seem to have developed a squeak when braking. I checked the wheels for heat, and noticed that the offside is slightly warmer than the near side, but only slightly. Something to be concerned about I assume? Back to the dealer? And yes, I tried a search 😉

Also, for what it’s worth. The dealer told me that Alko installed the faulty brakes for around 18 months, and that it was some time after that, that Alko realised the scale of the problem. In the meantime, folks that had their brakes replaced most likely had more of the same, ie, faulty brakes.

On Monday our Coachaman caravan had 'new' pads fitted to it by our dealer. As far as we know they are the 'new' pads supplied by Alko.

We had to provide a photo of the axle plate on the van first, this is to enable Alko to confirm what year the axle was made. Ours was one of them that had the problem, which hopefully has now been fixed.

According to our dealer Alko switched suppliers a few years ago to an American company, they have now switched back to another supplier, judging by the complaints and the amount of vans we have personally heard both UK and abroad with squealing brakes, it will have cost Alko a pretty penny.

I might be missing something, but I have to say that the notion of dealers knowingly selling vans that could well have faulty brakes is imo, somewhat scandalous.

Is a brake that squeals faulty? I've had  brakes on cars that squealed but they still worked.

I think when one takes into account the fact that my van, as others, has only covered 500 miles at most, and has scored drums?

I doubt they'd be scored within 500 miles but accept that they might squeal .... possibly/probably drums made with the cheapest of cheap metal.

But it has been confirmed that my drums are/were scored. To me, that’s faulty.

They were noisy, that does not mean they were innefictive regarding stopping power.
