Parking a motorhome

Hi

We are considering buying a motorhome 6m to 7m in length and no more that 3m in height. Storage off road is not a problem when not in use and parking on site is clearly easy. Our worry is how easy is it to park a MH of this size when visiting towns/cities and tourist attractions both in the UK and in Europe. Are there any hints/tips/tricks that anybody can share? Or is the advantage of no towing and fast setup on site outweighed by difficulty in parking the unit when out and about on holiday?

We are concerned that the idea of motorhome ownership may be spoilt by restricting where it can be parked. For example, if visiting Birmingham for a day, are there places where the vehicle can be parked be it car park, on road parking, park and ride etc. Any experience or advice on this subject will be gratefully received.

Birmingham is just an example, this applies to all cities/towns (eg Nantes France, Rotterdam Netherlands, Brugges Belguim etc) and/or tourist attractions.

I'm not a city fan, much prefer to be in the open, be it hills or coast. I think living in a small village out in the country I'm just not used to the noise so city breaks can be difficult if we end up in a hotel in the thick of it.

Not a big museum or art gallery fan unless something special. I did however enjoy London when we visited a few years ago, we stayed at the club site Abbey Wood.

Rome was another city we both enjoyed and would go back again for a longer stay.

I don't mind an occasional city either home or abroad. One day is ample for me. Wild horses would not drag me into London, despite all it has to offer. Last visit was around 1982

We have visited London several times over the years, stopping at Abbey Wood. We did last November for the first time in our MH. It was so easy popping down for 3 nights and access to the city  is so easy from AW. As we were leaving we decided that we would make it a regular trip, to visit  museums, exhibitions etc. Since March of course Covid has put paid to any thoughts of visiting any cities. Hopefully by the end of next year we will feel confident enough to return.

Well one day is fine if what you want to see can be seen and enjoyed in one day. It depends on the city and what the city offers I suppose.

My attitude is if I don't see it this time there is always next time. There may not be a next time I know. (No next time for London however)

As cities go I don't mind York, Chester or Worcester, but they are not really more  than big towns anyway. The one city I would like to return to is Stockholm, but it would have to be with a local as a guide, just as it was last time we visited.

Bill Bryson likes London, to quote him, from is delightful book The Road to Little Dribbling (more notes from a small island) :-

"No body realises it, but London is one of the least crowded cities on earth. New Yok has 93 people per hectare, Paris 83, but London just 43. If London were as densely populated as Paris, it would have a population of 35 million. Instead what it has - parks 142 of them - and more six hundred squares. Almost 40 per cent of London is green space."

Last time we went to London in the motorhome we stayed at Abbey Wood. We took the bus to Greenwich, had a tour of the Cutty Sark. Then  onto the River boat to the City visiting the Globe and Tate Modern. Lunch overlooking the river. Another day a trip to the Royal Observatory, worth the Climb for the view. When Cross Rail is up and running I would like to go back.

Even in these "unusual" times london was busy with foreign visitors this last weekend ,and OHs son on one of his often cycling trips ,on Sunday and said there were hundreds at the barriers keeping Whitehall clear for the Remembrance service, also many tourists around the places that were closed by the lockdown, he says he knew they not uk citizens ,as he was for ever being asked directions surprised
