Towcar of the year awards '23 -EVs abound

I was really please to see the number of EVs in the awards this year, with my own (Polestar 2) taking the spot for the EV Towcar category. Whilst they are still expensive, in the class 5 (1500kg - 1700kg) category (won by the XC40 EV) there were two Hyundais, The Santa Fe and Ioniq5, at almost the same price - the EV being slightly cheaper, and only a smidge more than the Skoda Superb.

There is a great article on Caravan Times, here, by one of the judges from the competition which makes for interesting reading.

As summarised by Andrew Ditton in his latest video, if you can live with the drawbacks around towing while charging, and range on a single charge, they really do work.

The UK charging infrastructure still has a way to go, but is improving daily, and as time passes we are going to see more in the used market - and I think the understanding of battery life will grow to the point of trust for their lifetime.

I think the future for caravaning after 2030 is looking bright.

It must just be me then. I don't struggle money wise but I'd not pay that kind of money for a small Eurobox what ever badge was on it. I've had my 14 plate ML350 for 3 & half years & paid £26000 for it from a main dealer. I could have bought a cheaper ML350 but this one is well spec'd.

All fair enough. Horses for courses. We bought our 08 plate XC90 from a main dealer 9 month old for £32k and ran it until Feb 21 when we sold it for 5k. The v60 was a 66 plate, about 32k in aug 17, sold this May for 18k. A new XC90 same spec today would be about £65k. A new V60, same spec, probably about the same.  Usually we buy cars 2nd hand, a year old from a main dealer. Right now used cars are going for the same price as new ones, and new we could get 4 years 0% finance with a £1k deposit contribution. We wanted the Fiat EV, so it was a no brainier. Others want different cars - life’s rich tapestry:-)

I've got a new diesel on order thats coming in March. I looked all the UK for nearly new with the same spec, but the nearest I could find was nearly £3k more expensive, and didn't have a towbar. I got a deal via CarWow, and was astonished at the saving. I was even able to negotiate a little more off from the winning bidder.

Going diesel is the right choice for me right now, and I'll keep this car for at least 10 years

before we purchased our XC90 in July i was looking at the new Kia Sorento, used prices were higher than new (but you couldent get new one!) Our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe cost £28k after employee discount, a new 2.2 diesel SF now costing around £44k.

I have read two snippets of news ref EVs  today

1,it seems dogs are more relaxed when travelling in Bevs than deisel vehicles less noise possibly

2, Switzerland will ban EVs from charging unless required for essential journies if they have electricity power shortages

Just been reading the review of the Skoda Enyaq iV SUV  in the club magazine. Sounds a  splendid vehicle solo  but when it comes to the towing capabilities its another story. Kerbweight 2299kg but towing limit 1200kg.and the testers think you will struggle to get a range of 130 miles. This is a £49720 vehicle,

There are much better options out there and for less.

Agree. If I were look for a vehicle specifically for towing, that probably would not be it. But if I was occasionally towing a small trailer or small caravan, and this was an option on a company car list, it might work.
I would be looking at a Kia or Hyundai though.

Carwow did a track test on the Enyaq using roof boxes, cycle rack/bike and a caravan that's worth a look, its on youtube.
