Cirencester Park access road

We were out walking near Cirencester today so thought we'd divert to wander past the club site to see how things looked.

Well, not sure if this is good news or bad, but the access road has been diverted..

So - good news - for anyone with a pothole aversion - it's been resurfaced and the tarmac is now billiard table smooth (apart from the inevitable speed humps!)

Not such good news - instead of a long straight road with plenty of wide stretches to allow for units to pass it is now very narrow and winding, with large boulders each side at the entrance and just a couple of small lay bys for passing, so heaven help you if you meet another unit coming in or out.

I can't see any practical alternative to the "off by 12 and no arrivals before 1" arrangement. We'll just have to wait and see - well, not us obviously! wink

Perhaps a lot of posts here should be in the thread 'Is towing really that scary'. Would it stop me from visiting the site now it's been improved, no of course not, we can all reverse if need be, can't we?

Reversing our Motorhome OK. A caravan on that width with added rocks and on any week day in term time lots of kids. Forget it!!! It would not be safe and would fail any reasonable risk assessment.🤷🏻‍♀️

From the images provided it looks an improvement only in as much as the entry angle rather than the lengths of the laybys. Do little, half you know what solution I suspect

I can reverse but it takes me longer than when I had two working eyes having to turn my head so far from side to side. For me however, when I stay near a town I often will only visit it once during a 5 night stay and so I might just as well pick a site 15 miles away and drive for my visit.

It is no worse than some of the one carriageway width country lanes on some CLs I have visited, no-one had to risk assess those, you just stay away and question your driving skills.

Were there lots of school and college kids getting in the way? The new road layout only partially removes them. Those comming from the estates the other side of the park will still use the full length of the lane. In such situations I would have thought a risk assessment essential. Even without any reversing, it's a narrow road ( in parts ) for school kids to be sharing with caravans.

The more I follow this post, the more I am convinced that there are some for whom nothing less than a perfectly straight dual carriageway will suffice. How many members are quite prepared to tow several miles down narrow country lanes with few passing places to reach their favourite secluded CL?  Indeed this may be the norm for many due to where they live. We are booked on Cirencester for 10 nights in August, am I concerned? No. Will we cancel? No. By the way our caravan is only 5.4m long.

Neither will we cancel. Although if we still had our 12 metre combined length car / caravan, I would be undecided. To me it's more about the situation. Once the college and school are back there will be kids in the mix. That plus the fact, that unlike a narrow road to a CL, that has been there for 100 years. This one has been deliberately constructed in this manner in May 2020.😖

It is one thing being able to reverse and another altogether if somebody is behind in your blind-spot. OK I can ask OH to get out and watch for anybody coming behind me but the site location is not that essential for me to faff. The C&CC Winchcombe site would be fine.

I have a reversing camera at the back of the van that shows on my cars screen, incorporated with one of those bleeper thingies and like yourself if needed then OH would get out and guide me in bad situations. I feel I have enough to satisfy my requirements for reversing safely along with the safety of others around me.

Perhaps when/if I lose confidence will be the time to look at getting a Motorhome.
