Why no speeding?

I know this is a thorny issue given the number of complaints on here about speeding on site - and I witnessed it many times.

However, we are currently staying at Carnon Downs near Truro - an Affiliated Site.

It is a very large site in terms of acreage and probably three or four times the size of, for example, Broadway but with a similar number of pitches. As a consequence, there are a number of long straight sections of roadway which you would have thought would have encouraged speeding.

There are no speed limit signs around the site and the only speed bumps are around the reception area.

We have been here almost two weeks and I have yet to see anyone exceeding about 5/6 mph on the site roads . Admittedly I haven’t been watching all the time - better things to do - but the absence of speeders is noticeable.

The only difference between this site and the club sites we have been on is that a lot of the roads are loose gravel rather than tarmac and I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

We've been going to Black Knowl since 1995 till they remodelled it (ruined it) and it always had a tarmac road round the site , kids on bikes used it as a race track

Ps how did some vent there"fury"about kids on bikes and speeding in 1995wink

Perhaps the clue could be in the OP:

The Affiliated sites that we have used were not as tolerant towards speeding as club sites appear to be.

Yep, just what I was going to say. AFs don’t have HQ to answer to, they can just get on with applying the behave or you are off approach.

Thats what the owner of Milestones (near Newark ) told us, "a membership card for the cc does not give you access to my site as a right "and I can eject said members if they do not comply

Milestones is one of the AFs that we have stayed at.

We were told the same thing in a friendly manner.

Same as always say about CLs, their site, their rules. Like it or leave.

Carnon Downs has "rules" about conduct on the site roads, I seem to recall several features that make it less likely that problems might occur. People seemed to respect this approach.

I’ve said before that if the Club got tough on a few who without question are endangering others, and rescinded membership, the message would get out loud and clear. The Wardens need that sort of HQ backup, or they are powerless. Makes the job much more difficult.

Having said that, I can’t recall seeing much in way of speeding on sites, but then we only go at certain times and to certain sites.

I think you'll find Carnon Downs is more cautious with children, not allowing bikes and scooters etc but offers a very good play area (plus the Devoran cycle route down the road.) The design of the site is quite good, wider driving routes and separate areas.

But my point was that there are no speed limit signs anywhere on the site and the speed bumps are limited to the area immediately around the reception area. Nor were we given a lecture on arriving about speed or, indeed, about how to pitch up. Just a warm, friendly welcome.

So - apart from the gravel roads - but only on part of the site, what makes it such a different experience?
