Why no speeding?

I know this is a thorny issue given the number of complaints on here about speeding on site - and I witnessed it many times.

However, we are currently staying at Carnon Downs near Truro - an Affiliated Site.

It is a very large site in terms of acreage and probably three or four times the size of, for example, Broadway but with a similar number of pitches. As a consequence, there are a number of long straight sections of roadway which you would have thought would have encouraged speeding.

There are no speed limit signs around the site and the only speed bumps are around the reception area.

We have been here almost two weeks and I have yet to see anyone exceeding about 5/6 mph on the site roads . Admittedly I haven’t been watching all the time - better things to do - but the absence of speeders is noticeable.

The only difference between this site and the club sites we have been on is that a lot of the roads are loose gravel rather than tarmac and I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

I’ve said before that if the Club got tough on a few who without question are endangering others, and rescinded membership, the message would get out loud and clear. The Wardens need that sort of HQ backup, or they are powerless. Makes the job much more difficult.

Having said that, I can’t recall seeing much in way of speeding on sites, but then we only go at certain times and to certain sites.

The cars probably travel at the same speed on commercial sites as on Club sites - but on commercial sites the visitors don't get as agitated about it as those who stay on Club sites.

They probably do but do not have this type of forum where it is "open season" to post anything?  some think  is negative about this clubwink

It’s a thorny ol’ issue, speeding. I stayed at Troutbeck Head recently. I religiously stuck to 5mph, which is tick-over in 1st. I reckon I was the only one that observed the limit, as none of the vehicles I saw/heard were ticking-over. On one occasion, one fella was clearly doing at least 20mph as he passed by my pitch, which was obviously excessive. Had I  the time to catch his registration I would have reported him. Ok, that incident aside, at no time did I feel that anyone was in danger. Just an observation, I have no axe to grind...

But my point was that there are no speed limit signs anywhere on the site and the speed bumps are limited to the area immediately around the reception area. Nor were we given a lecture on arriving about speed or, indeed, about how to pitch up. Just a warm, friendly welcome.

So - apart from the gravel roads - but only on part of the site, what makes it such a different experience?

Probably the vehicles were over the 5mph limit!

We have been to that site, because it's more spacious than most, perhaps it's more difficult to tell the actual speed of a vehicle?

Also when we were there for a fortnight the atmosphere was more laidback than any club site we have been on, so again a vehicle going say 7mph would hardly raise an eyebrow, whilst certainly on here and perhaps club sites the response is altogether different, rules are rules and all that!

May explain in 25plus years of spending summer in Cornwall, we have only ever found availability for our dates at Carnon Downs once, a very popular place.

For our sins we recently spent three days on Durham Grange.  Mostly we were out and about but whilst on site it seemed to be the norm for the vast majority - cars car/ van rigs and MH's, including the wardens on tractors - to exceed the 5 mph limit.  I estimate most were doing 15-20 mph.

Last time we were there, it was covered in snow, nothing dared do more than trickle along!

We use more private sites and CLs than Club Sites. I don’t think it’s the Club Sites that are the issue. It’s the members. As with other aspects of public life, the vast majority of folks just get on with their day, doing the right thing, trying not to be a nuisance to anyone else. A tiny minority do cause issues, but they are probably the same when at home.
