In praise of British Cheese

Having just returned from the self styled capital of the cheese world, namely France, I would like to say how much we love British Cheese. Yes, we did enjoy many different types of French Cheese and count some of them among our own favourites but I don't think British Cheeses get the plaudits they deserve.

Nothing tastes quite like a really good Cheddar, our current one is Colliers (a Welsh one), or a Blackstick Blue or a Shropshire Blue or Mrs. Applebys Cheshire or a creamy Lancashire. Plus we are prepared to experiment with our cheese, by putting chilli or mustard etc. in. There are some smashing local entrepreneurs making cheese these days.

Why are our cheese not more respected?

I may have mentioned this before, but if I have it doesn’t matter.

Local cheese maker Martin Gott uses our milk to make St Sundays Cheese. Available to buy in several high class establishments in London, and on the cheese boards of some renowned restaurants. And to buy in person or online from such as Courtyard Dairy and Cartmel Cheese. And if it’s not sold out from Tebay services.

Other products are in development.

Bought some Barbers 1833 Hartendale Extra Mature Cheddar hen at Chatsworth Farm Shop.

Had some for lunch and it's a good punchy cheddar. Apparently matured for a couple of years.

My error. Cheese wasn't "Hartendale" but just Barbers 1833 extra mature cheddar.

The Hartendale should have related to a soft blue cheese that we also bought at the same time (also recommended)

I’ve been following this thread since 2016 and I’m sure there are a few mature cheeses out there right now from that era. The range of cheeses available today is now quite amazing, back in the 60s it was just that plastic stuff and an odd one or two traditional ones available but today what a fantastic diverse variety is we mow now have available. Not sure they are traditional cheeses but hey many are really good and so enjoyable.
