Too much information

Does anyone else get frustrated by the amount of information superimposed on TV screens especially during important events. The BBC is the worst offender I think.

During the many Covid briefings from Downing Street there have been at least three different strap-lines, one at the top telling us that the picture is' Live from Downing Street' (but not, of course, if you have recorded it)Towards the bottom of the screen is 'BBC News' frequently telling us that Boris or others will be leading the briefing that is already on and that we are trying to watch and then a second ticker-tape line at the bottom of the screen of 'Breaking News' some of which we have just heard Boris etc telling us and some completely irrelevant to the matter in hand. These two lower lines in particular block out a good proportion of the screen, often making important information shown at the bottom of the graphs completely invisible. The lower part of a person's head is also frequently obliterated.

The same thing happened yesterday during the 41 gun salute for Prince Philip. Many of the guns couldn't actually be seen for the same reason as above, particularly Cardiff Castle. Why broadcast something that can't be seen. I may as well listen to the radio.

Do the producers of these programmes never actually look at what they are broadcasting or do the copy writers just believe in their own self importance and believe that their wordage is more important than the picture that they are covering up?

So , next Saturday is his funeral, so no doubt the complainers will be back out that their tv viewing was disrupted undecided

I have enjoyed reading a lot of the articles about Prince Philip, and have raised my awareness of his life and his devoted service to the Queen. It’s terribly sad as always when any loved family member dies.

I just found it rather archaic in this day and age that a premier broadcasting outlet, (one that almost everyone has to pay towards in this country in some way shape or form if they own a TV) decides to blanket coverage the same event on every Channel they broadcast. I have no doubt that the Beeb were trying to be respectful, but shutting down everything was rather archaic. Apparently, commentators doing sports coverage had no idea that they had been taken off air, left wittering away to no one.

As I said, it’s rare we have TV on beyond University Challenge and Match of the Day, so it wasn’t a complaining issue for us, just a strange decision. Most of what we watch is on iplayer, we should have utilised this.

I just thought the same blanket coverage on all channels of the National Broadcaster was something I would expect in China but not in the UK.

Of course Prince Philip’s funeral will be a National Event, rightly broadcast for anyone who wants to watch, pay their respect that way. It is a little bit of our history, the passing of a national figure head. But hopefully next Saturday will be a planned TV broadcast, not leaving lots of folks wondering what is going on, as it did Friday. That’s the difference.

Archaic? or a reminder to the nations of the UK and the millions of others that we still have the remnants of respect for those who have given so much to us , and many others around the world with their dedication, (even if at times it has been a outspoken method in some eyes)

In the past it was what most of us was all we had, and i can remember the solemn music on all programmes when the queens father died,

Our headmaster came to each class to tell us and we all stood in respect his words "The King has Died ,God save Her majesty Queen Elizabeth"
