Mole Traps

I was disgusted to find out that Caravan Club Policy is to trap and kill moles.

I saw a man setting mole traps along the external and internal perimeter hedge at the entrance to Old Hartley Club Site on Sunday 19 September 2021.

I enquired if he was setting mole traps and he said yes. I asked if that was ethical and humane. He said it was better than seeing mole hills. I said 'is it really?'. He said it was Caravan Club Policy.

As Members surely we have the right to decide whether we'd be happy seeing mole hills, or whether we'd prefer to trap and kill moles, sometimes not immediately killing them and leaving them to suffer.

I wonder why the Wardens can't just remove the erupted earth if it's deemed unsightly?

On top of this, what if a dog dug them up and got injured.  Many terriers and hounds would be very interested in digging where something like a trap has been buried.

Moles are not the enemy, they aerate soil and eat pests...see link below:

https://www.rspca.org.uk/documents/1494935/9042554/Living+with+-+moles+-+formatted+%28V1.2%29+-+2017.pdf/61a0a5f6-b28e-c46e-042d-5b8fecf54207?t=1553171460360&download=true

I would like to see Members being given the opportunity to vote on such cruel practices and whether they feel their Club should continue with them.

In my opinion, if people think natural occurrences like mole hills are unsightly they should question why they want to go caravanning - isn't it getting out into nature, not being in pristine, bowling green like sites?

I'd be interested to hear other people's views on the subject.

Invariably rich farmers have made their monies outside farming.  However the ordinary ones just keep plugging along, doing their bit and taking the unfound criticism like here as part of life. We dont have the time to form pressure groups or some so called charity. The only thing we cant understand is, if these people hate us so much, why do they keep coming to the "green and pleasant countryside". Some of the above dont deserve a reply.

Why should you think people hate farmers, Fish?

What I hate is the blaming of others for the ills of rural life and the constant criticism and put downs of anyone who doesn’t live in rural surroundings. That is the true picture of unfounded criticism and something I’m afraid you indulge in far too often. There is good and bad in all sectors of society and it’s not a case of country folk right and townies wrong.

That's not worthy of you Rocky.

Living in Wales we see suicide and depression caused by financial difficulties in farmers as being among the highest percentage of any work category.

I personally knew of a farmer in the Lakes who took his own life as he couldn't make ends meet. He was a relative of one of my in-laws.

There are some farmers out there really struggling.

These sort of general categorisations don't help.

It's like saying all Yorkshire folk have deep pockets. Untrue. I know several generous ones myself.

I wouldn't want this thread closed down until K9 gets a proper response.

I disagree WN, I’d counter that trying to control someone’s freedom of speech is not worthy of you, neither is posting an attack & using passive aggression in an attempt to stifle a response. You forget I worked with hundreds of farmers over the years all who used the ‘poor farmer’ ruse to knock down my bill only one lived in squalor & that was down to a gambling habit. I speak from experience. Re tight Yorkshire folk-lots have used that old chestnut particularly on here, does it hurt-no, do I take offence-no. They can say that without the fear of me being a member of the cancel culture. Freedom of speech is alive & well in Yorkshire. You sell K9 short, she is a super resourceful Lady who won’t let anyone trash her morals, she’s proved that๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Rocky I'm not knocking your freedom of speech at all.

I'm just knocking the message.

Sure there are farmers that will fight a price down. Sure there are electricians or plumbers or campsite owners who will inflate prices. That's life. Doesn't mean that all of those trades should be derided.

You stated that there are no poor farmers. I know there are. If you had used some instead of no it would have given a different perspective to the post.

And finally I don't know how on earth you manage to see "An Attack or passive aggression" in my post at all.

I'm not allowed to disagree with you? Isn't that an "attack" on my freedom of speech?

And how dare you for suggesting that I am selling K9 short. I am trying to stop this thread getting away from the Opening Post. Namely Moles at a Club site. I have respect for the way K9 has gone about her complaint.

Don't put words or insuations into my mouth.

Meanwhile, the moles keep digging their merry way around my garden.

I've never actually seen a mole but I think my minature wire-haired Daschund came very close last night. She sat for ages on the lawn, in the same spot, obviously interested in something going on below ground until it started raining and she bolted for cover. She's just inquisitive and would run a mile if something popped it's head above the surface. Apparently her waste is another good way to deter moles - but so far this hasn't worked either.

Onwards and upwards (or downwards in this case)

Fair point exT๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป, Dogs & moles know stuff. . .Particularly about where each other Dwell. My Dogs too sometimes lay in parts of the garden with that pricked ear position head tilted looking into the grass then t’other one will join her. Thus far neither of them have had a nose to nose encounter with the little gentleman in the black velvet waistcoat gladly๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Let the critics read about the Scottish Clearances or even visit the NT Calke Abbey to see who decimated the countryside of its wildlife. In each case they were landed  gentry or city moguls. As the critics here arent interested in facts lets return to K9 thread. Good morning.

Hi Everyone

Update for you all.  The question I put to the AGM went unanswered.  I received a reply saying they were aware I had also put my question to Site Operations, so were leaving it to them to reply.

As you know I'm not allowed to paste the actual reply I received so here's my rundown of what was said.

I asked why the Wardens from OH said they often redistributed soil from mole hills on site, but then set traps.  Basically, why were some dealt with by moving soil and some with traps.

The reply was that mole hills on site are generally on the perimeter, where footfall is minimal and less possibility of someone tripping.  Doesn't make sense because the mole hills where the traps were set were outside the site.

I asked about risk assessments and whether the risk to dogs/pets had been considered.

The reply was that method and risk assessments were undertaken and cable barrel traps were set at 4- 6" deep,

I asked if local residents were informed and the land owner.

The reply was that it's not common practice to set traps outside the perimeter of the site.  Residents were not consulted/informed and the Regional Manager was not aware this was happening and had therefore not actioned it.

They say that pest control operations are being reviewed by the Site Operations Team Head and the Regional Management Team.

Thanks again everyone for your input, whatever your views were!

And that's probably the best you're going to get even though it doesn't fully address all your points. Hopefully you've rattled a few cages, K9.๐Ÿ‘
