Server errors still appearing, when is it going to be sorted ??

Unfortunately as its seems to have been going on for several years now, on and off, I suspect that unless there are major changes in the forum software I fear it will continue. I don't think it has ever been officially confirmed what the cause is. We do know the forum software is now out of date and I suspect that could be having an impact on the number of errors. They can often be worked round but I suppose that is not really the point!

So much for this morning's maintenance!  Been impossible to get on here by normal means because of 'server errors'.  I only managed it by going into 'My Stories' and then 'Discussions'.

Edit - just tried to go back to 'Discussions' from here - and can't because of "Server Errors'. This is ridiculous!

not sure it is the software, ok it might be out of date but software is software if it works successfully for several weeks why should it suddenly fail, unless of course somebody is trying to do updates to the software,

my guess is that it is the server(s)  that are at fault, e.g. we seem to get more errors at busy periods like now when possibly lots of people are on holiday trying to book easter holidays or even summer holidays so the server(s) are especially busy and not handling transactions as fast as they might, so yes old type software will fail if the handshake it is expecting from the server is a long time in coming because the server is busy, we are talking milli seconds here, and old coding generally had no safety net built into it to say "hang on a mo" lets give it another go to see if we can get a handshake, before failing, today sofware is much more resiliant and will hang around for that all important handshake, yes what the user sees is a slow down in the application he may be using but at least it works.

My guess is the club are probably looking towards new hardware, but that in its self presents difficulties as old computer code may not be totally compatible with the new hardware and some adjustments may be necessary, and again this presents problems, e.g. some of the tech team who were responsible for designing /writing the original software may no longer be available and for sure there will be holes in the software that nobody knows about except the person who left them. Have worked with some great writers of computer code, but lots of these people never were very good at keeping accurate documentation.

Also the system seems to be down for maintenance an aweful lot, if this is for software changes?  back in the day, we would make the changes then run with them for a given period of time before implementing any more not make change after change and you always had a back out plan in place so you could quickly remove any new fixes that were causing a problem and revert to as was.

Not read the clubs annual report, so not sure if there was any mention of software/hardware updates, apart from the new booking system

Another member having server errors as of 17:02 26th March 2024

Seeing the thread started in August 2022, and has 39 pages of complaints speaks volumes.

However, taking an positive view, the chances of any hacker getting members details is nearly zero. This conclusion based on the view that members cannot get a secure  connection, chances are foreign powers will not either.

Getting the page to refresh seems to bring life back.

The server error seems to have moved to the discussion page. Meaning unless a thread is showing in latest activity, or you have saved a link, you are unable to access it. ☹️

I can post OK, PD, and I find most times with this recent batch of server errors they clear if you refresh the page.

This seems to be a new generation of S/Es😀
