Ease of arrival/welcome

Not good at all!

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and found our way to the CL where there were 2 signs on a fence with arrows, 1 to hardstanding & 1 to grass so as we’d booked for grass we opened the gate and drove in. There was a slight slope and as soon as we got to the bottom our front wheels got stuck in the field which was very wet. There was no signage at all on the gate and we had no pre warning from the owners to say not to use the grass. The owners were out but a kind neighbour contacted them to ask if they could tow us out with one of their tractors, the owner arrived back and told us that the grass was not suitable and we should’ve known this because the gate was shut, I replied that the gate was pushed too and not locked plus a sign would’ve been an idea. We were put on the hardstanding which is a very sloping large area like a car park in front of a barn opposite some rubbish and old wooden sheds. There were 2 caravans also on here, 1 was a family waiting for completion on a house and the other we were told were living there. We pitched by the end of the barn but were unable to sit out due to it being used as a drive through area for people coming in and out. We were booked and paid for 5 nights but due to not being on the proper pitch on the CL that we should’ve been in we decided on Sunday morning to leave and find another site. The owners were out when we knocked on the door so we called twice and left voicemail to say that we would call back later for a refund of the £80 we had paid for the week. They did not return our call so we returned later in the afternoon, my husband went to the door and Judith answered, he said who he was and he had come for our refund but was told that we wouldn’t be getting anything back as we had caused her husband to have to tow us and had made ruts in their grass! My husband informed her that we were not to know that the grass was like a bog and we should’ve been notified either via email which is how we booked or their should be a sign on the gate. She then said that she would not refund us as they had to turn someone away for the weekend which is untrue as there was only 1 other camper on the CL and if you count us plus the people on the hardstanding (who are actually living there) that only made 4 in total so there was still space for another. The owner then said that she would refund £40 as it was our fault but my husband said no as it was the site at fault not us. I took a video of our van being towed to show family what had happened but the owner took offence at this and said to my husband that I had a cheek filming it! Eventually they agreed and gave us £60 back keeping £20 for a night that we weren’t even there! We were told on site that we were not the first that had got stuck so I think the owners need to look at notifying people that their site is unsuitable in wet weather. Hardstanding area is a glorified car park and the owners attitudes are awful!

You booked onto our site for the Easter weekend. Your booking request did not specify that you required a grass pitch, only that you required electric and did not need hardstanding.

Prior to your visit, we had had a prolonged spell of very wet weather and so closed the gate into the grass, leaving the access road to the hardstanding open.

It is a shame that we were out when you arrived or we would have come down to see you.

When we arrived home, my husband immediately came down to help you, changed the hitches on his tractor and towed your motorhome out. It would have been courteous to have asked if you could have taken a video on your phone, bearing in mind you were on private property. We would have appreciated an apology from you for the huge ruts you made in our field by constantly revving up your motorhome. Our mobile telephone number is on both CL Booking and the CAMC website so you could have rung that number when you first had problems and we would have given you help.

We always try to be very helpful to all members and most people are always very grateful. It is a pity that you feel the need to be critical and argumentative.

As you mention, we had closed the gate into the grass area. As the weather had been so wet it would have been sensible just to have walked a few yards to check the ground would carry your motorhome. Judith suggested to you that in future you might think it wise to do this especially as you mentioned that you had recently purchased your motorhome.
