Ease of arrival/welcome

Seven nights in the Peak District

This site has lovely views and is centrally located between Bakewell and Buxton. However I agree with some of the reviews in that it certainly requires some maintenance/upkeep. Payment is on arrival (cash/cheque in anenvelope), although we found the location of the owners letterbox difficult to find, as did others that we spoke to. There is a notice stuck on a window but the directional arrow has faded, this could do with being renewed. We did not see the owner at all during our seven night stay, not even an acknowledgement of receipt of payment. Pitches are smallish hardstanding, although quite a lot of the stone has worn away, hence quite a bit of mud to contend with. If you wish to park car and caravan on the hardstanding then the awning has to be pitched on grass. Before we could pitch our awning we had to clear dog mess (twice), we don't own a dog so not at all happy with this. Not sure if this was from a previous caravaner or from the Labrador that lives at the farm, it visited the site (on it's own) on a number of occasions, barking at my husband whilst he dealt with our water. Elsan point is good, fresh and grey water requires attention, being extremely muddy around the tap, could do with some slabs or you may wish to take wellington boots. Flies were horrendous and whilst the site is on a working farm it is some distance from the cow sheds. Everyone commented on the flies. Mobile phone signal was extremely poor for us but depends which provider and pitch you are on. If you are on pitch 1, 2 or 3 you will need an aerial extension for the TV reception, lucky we had one. Price is a little on the high side, there is a commercial site a few hundred yards away which has full facilities and free wifi included for a fraction more than we paid for Blackwell Hall and the offer a discount for seven nights or more. On a plus side we were able to walk from the site to the Limestone Way and Monsal Trail and visit many of the attractions in the area with good transport links.
