Ease of arrival/welcome

Not at all what we expected .

pro's: this site is easily accessible from Sheffield & major roads. It's geography with regard to walking in the Peaks is perfect - just a 10 minute drive & you're right in the Peaks surrounded by rolling hills & stunning walks. It's easy to get to anywhere in the Peaks from there. There are several pubs just a short drive away (we didn't go to any, but 3-4 of them looked lovely). There's an Sainsbury's Local just a 5 min drive away, perfect for the basics. Cons: it definitely isn't peaceful! There's the dreadfully potholed entrance road that's shared with the farm & farm shop etc that's right by the site, & that's pretty busy from 8am-6pm, & after that the farm machinery are to-ing / fro-ibg till all hours. Obviously its a working farm, so farm noise is to be expected, fair enough. But there's also a big cow shed that backs directly onto the site, & the noise, the smell, & the flies made it impossible for us to sit outside our van. Fly screens were in full use! Added to this, there is also a kennels next door, so barking competed with the mooing. Obviously all of the above are unrelated to the site itself, & should not reflect on the site owners, but I do feel all of the above impeded our ability to enjoy our stay there. On arrival, the grass was very long & 2 pitches were separated by a line of uncut weeds & stinging nettles. The owner said it had been too wet to cut the grass . Perhaps/perhaps not - other sites have managed. Stinging nettles surrounded the tap & cdp, & clearly had not been strimmed back for a fair while. The site itself looks very run down, & if we're honest, we've been caravanning for 27 years, a & used cl's for a good 17 of those years, & we both said its one of (if not the) worst sites we've been to. So unkempt & it wouldn't take much to tidy it up. We were using the site as a stopover travelling from Suffolk to Northumberland & back again, & geographically it was perfect for this. However we honestly regretted paying for our return stopover in advance as we really didn't want to return. But we did, & we were pleased to see an attempt had been made to cut the grass, though it was still long & cuttings were left. The weed/nettle line that separated 2 of the pitches on our first visit had thankfully been cut too. The nettles around the tap and cdp had not however. I accept that this summer has been awful & a lot of rain has fallen, but other sites we've been to have strived to do their best to stay on top of the maintenance & grass cutting etc. The site is narrow/cramped, & maneuvering when all pitches are in use I should imagine would be very tight. Just our opinion, which obviously varies greatly from others it seems. I'm one to give credit when it's due, and notify of downfalls when I feel it may help others.
