Idyllic

Good communication when booking and a warm, relaxed welcome from John the site owner. The site is a well-kept, gently sloping enclosed paddock with water, toilet and recycling disposal (no normal rubbish disposal) next to the historic mound of Fotheringhay castle. It has easy access to a sheltered section of the river Nene for paddleboarding / kayaking / swimming and is a five minute walk to The Falcon pub which we ate at twice and had great food and service both times. A very peaceful site in a lovely location. We were only meant to stay two nights but stayed four!

A very roomy CL

Set in beautiful countryside next to the River Nene, ideal for canoes or fishing. Pitches well spaced apart giving you plenty of room. Village of Fotheringhay very picturesque with thatched roof cottages and a beautiful church. Visited The Falcon Inn in the village after hearing it was a finalist in the 2021 Pub Food Competition. We were very disappointed - my husband had the signature burger which sounded excellent but was totally tasteless, poorly presented and very overpriced.

Lovely Location

Agree with virtually all that has been said. Fotheringhay is a beautiful and interesting place. Downsides were that the adjacent field was being used for camping and caravanning and facilities were being shared. Also boat users come up also to use the toilet emptying point etc. There really needs to be a water point at the WC emptying facility which is the worst I have experienced in fifty years of CLs. The re-cycling is great there will always be some general and don't understand why this cannot be handled.

A haven of tranquility and calm

We have just come back from 2 of the most relaxing nights at a site we have had. The views from the field are spectacular and a total joy watching the Red Kites and Buzzards overhead. We walked with our dog from the site along the Nene Way to Warmington Services and caught the bus to Oundle. We spent a lovely few hours looking round Oundle and enjoyed a lovely cup of coffee, bacon roll for hubby and cake for me at Beans. As we had the dog we did have to sit outside this was not a problem as others were out side too on the seats. We then caught the bus back to Warmington had an explore there then walked the Nene way back to the site. We went to the Falcon Inn with the dog in the Tap bar and we both enjoyed delicious open sandwiches before an explore of Fotheringhay. We did not have the opportunity to sample the main meals (next time). The history here is wonderful and the site is next to the old castle mound. Its worth a visit to the church to read all about Richard III and Mary Queen of Scots. We are a self contained unit so this site was not a problem for us. There is water and Chemical disposal point but as we were only there 2 nights we only used the water and emptied out the toilet at home. We also took our rubbish home as we had not much with us, there are recycling boxes there though. For us we found the site easily, the ground was fairly level a bit damp but again this did not cause us any problems. The Nene Way goes through the site which was a big hit with our dog as a lovely walk on the door step. John the owner was very friendly and contactable if any problems although we had none. If you want off grid tranquility this is the place although I can see it being busy in the summer months.

A gem of a CL

This site is perfect if you want a peaceful location and views - river one way, the castle mound and rolling fields the other. Plenty of space for you to pick your spot to park your van.  The Falcon pub is definitely worth a visit, booking essential for weekends, food was delicious.  Site fees are now £9 Note - you can only dispose of recycling items all other rubbish must be taken away with you so make sure you take a strong bin bag with you.  Excellent site and will definitely be back.

Peace beside the Nene

We have just spent a few days for the first time at this long established CL. We had a great, peaceful time with weather much better than forecast. The CL is rectangular field, flat at the top, then gently sloping down towards the river. It is immediately adjacent to the residual mound of Fotheringhay Castle and there is access to the river bank (short walk available) via a gate at the lower end of the site. There are views down to the river from most parts of the site. The field is kept mown and full recycling facilities are available. The only downside about the facilities is that the loo rinsing tap is some distance from the disposal point. A very peaceful location with an abundance of bird life, including Red Kites hovering low immediately overhead and geese, ducks, a Heron and Little Egrets on the river. The access route recommended is via Wansford, which is a few miles north. We found that, coming from the south, it is easier and shorter to use the A605, leaving the A1(M) at Junction 17. This does involve negotiating with care the narrow (one-way) bridge across the river at the entry to Fotheringhay, but it was plenty wide enough for our caravan. Locally, Oundle is a very pleasant town to visit with free parking and a market on Thursdays. We also enjoyed a National Trust visit to Lyveden New Bield, a few miles west of Oundle. This is a restored Elizabethan garden and 'lodge'. Paul, Maggie and Stella (the dog)

Best CL by far!

We spent one night here, on route home from a holiday in Wales. We'd spent the previous two nights at an overly priced CC site in Ludlow so it was so nice to find this little gem of a place. As a avid Richard III fan being able to spend the night in a field just feet away from the castle ruins of his birth obviously added to the appeal but the riverside location was bliss with scenic walks alongside the bank. We were able to watch the green woodpeckers in the hawthorn tree by the van, see a red kite soar above us and just chill out in a beautiful setting. we will certainly return.
