Perfect CL

I stayed at this CL some years ago, before the current owners took it over. I really like this sort of place: it’s a field behind a working farm, but with electricity points and water in the field. The new owners are delightful and friendly. (I left my new fleece in the field on my departure and they posted it out to me - thank you Lucy!) They have put in a new toilet and shower block, now located in the camping field. This was extremely clean and there was no shortage of hot water. The field isn’t huge, but I certainly didn’t find the pitches too small, as some people have commented. I really like Cowdale and I will go back. It’s peaceful and so close to so much wonderful countryside, and Buxton, which is just up the road.

A little gem

We booked this CL primarily in order to attend some G&S shows at the Buxton Opera House, it being the nearest site to the town centre. We were blessed with great weather for the first week, which persuaded us to extend to 10 nights. We were greeted on arrival by Lucy who showed us the choice of four pitches and explained how the metered ECU works. Unfortunately we initially took up more space than we should but Andy arrived before we had fully set up and we soon moved forward a few feet closer to the corner. Nice spot, but the pitching is quite tight to get 5 outfits on! Good walking from the site, including 30 minutes over the fields and down a lane to the Buxton Brewery and Aldi, from where you can catch a bus into town or to Ashbourne. Another 30 minutes walking brings you into Buxton itself. Several bus routes are then available, including two that will drop you off at the crossroads from where it is a 20 minutes walk back to the site. Another 10 minutes walk from the crossroads brings you to the bus stop for the TP route to Bakewell, Matlock and Derby. A short drive from the site is the wonderful High Peak bookstore and cafe, be sure not to miss this gem. Where EHU is concerned we had no complaints. It worked out at £3 per night and forces you to be careful not to use more electricity than you actually need. Our only misgiving was the fact that nobody took any serious notice of the clear instruction to keep their dog on a lead at all times. With hens running freely we thought this was highly irresponsible, and we had a case where a dog allowed free did its business by our car. The farmhouse is too far from the CL for the owners to be able to police their rule effectively. Why do dog owners feel so entitled to do as they wish? Nevertheless we hope very much to be able to return sane time next year.

Overpriced

You need to turn left when entering the farm as the cottages ahead have no exit for a caravans. Pitches are very close together and the photo on the site is misleading. The electricity is charged @ 44p per kw which is twice what I am paying for at home £20 lasted 4 days. The showers were clean and tidy with plenty of hot water. We were welcomed by Andrews mother and did not see Andrew or Lucy during our 5 day stay.

Nice Small CL

We booked this CL as a 4 night stop, on the way there was road closures so ended up going thro Buxton in really heave rain then i took a wrong turn off the A6 up to the site which I would NOT recommend to any one, on arrival we were met by Andrew who told us where to park , nice new mobile toilet block and showers, very wet ground on the site as it was & had been heavy rain, we did manage to get out a couple of times walking, Andrew & Lucy was very pleasant and helpful, electric was on a meter pitch price included toilet and showers also awning, the only thing was all though the toilet block was kept clean the waste bins were not emptied while we were there.

A lovely small CL

Stayed for 6 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great base for visiting different places in the Peak District. Owners very helpful. The shower block is immaculate and there's no extra charge. The electricity is metered and we spent £28 over the 6 nights. This meant it worked out at £24.50 per night. The owners have plans to increase the the size of the site slightly which will make it even better.

Weeks stay for walking in the area

Really good site, friendly, helpful, good value, great shower, hot as soon as you run it and the toilet kept very clean. We had some friends visit us on site and nothing was an issue for the owners. The guy that runs the site was exceptionally keen to refund us an overpayment as the website mentions £3.00 an awning. He explained this was old information and he made sure we were provided a refund. It is a working farm and the horses and lambs are in the next field, beautiful. About 3 miles away from Buxton, good shops, including Morrisons etc. Would definitely stay again when next in the area.

First Time, Won't be the Last

First CL we've used and won't be the last, we like the idea of small sites. Friendly arrival and shown to our pitch on the grass field. They have finished a couple of hard standings and have a couple left to do for the wetter months. Lovely new toilet and shower block with plenty of hot water. All pitches have electric if required via a pre-paid card, put how much you want on it and then get what you haven't used back on the morning of your departure. We had an hour stroll into Buxton through the viaduct with a cuppa on the way. A great place to base yourself for a few days or use as a stopover. Will be back later in the year

Lovely site

We stayed for one night in September. The site is one field with 5 pitches. Lovely welcome and friendly owners. Great peaceful location. Nice walk into Buxton across the fields. Shower, toilet, sink x2 (ladies & gents). Spotlessly clean & included in price. Good walk for the dog on site. Would definitely stay again.
