Caravan 14 night summer holiday - a mixed bag

First impression of the site “surely there cannot be a caravan site at the bottom of this lane” but after a quick walk there it was. The lane is narrow with high banked soil, trees and bushes each site. A slow and steady approach got us through. The CL field is a reasonable size but 3 of the pitches are squashed along the sea view. Whilst it looks spacious in the advertising its cramped with 3 motorhomes and if 3 caravans with awings arrived, they simply would not fit. Half way through our stay we witnessed a debate between a camper sited on a sea view pitch and the proprietor Roger when Roger abruptly asked him to move his stuff to make room for a new arrival. 2 motorhomes were setup when we arrived so we opted for pitch 5 along the side for extra space. The rubbish arrangements are “rubbish”. We were provided with a recycle bag and a general waste bag, told to use these bags only and once full to put them in the main bins provided. This leaves everyone with bags hanging from their campers. We kept ours in the awning. Unfortunately, 5 times our bin was ransacked by, what turned out to be, one of the proprietors’ dogs. The site is advertised as no dogs but the proprietor has 5 and 2 of these roams the CL field freely, looking for treats in the bin bags and leaving their mess wherever they please. The dogs are yappy and not used to children putting us on our guard whenever the dogs were roaming. An unpleasant situation occurred between myself and Roger regarding the toilet cleaning facilities. I was asked to empty any rinse water from the toilet cassette in to the grey water to save him 20p a litre, the cost of emptying his Elson tank. I refused stating this was polluting but Roger was quite forceful, told me to “do as I was told” and physically blocked the Elson emptying point. It is illegal to empty toilet waste in to the grey water and those caught doing it can be prosecuted to I would advise anyone asked to do similar to refuse in the first instance. Any subsequent emptying of toilet was done the normal way in to the Elson whilst keeping an eye out for Roger, not what we expected for a relaxing holiday! The closest beach is a 20 minute walk down the lane but a fairly steep walk back. It’s a pebble beach used more for launching kayaks and the occasional evening BBQ. The second nearest beach, further along the coastal path is similar and the third is no longer accessible. Following our OS map we walked inland only twice, once to New Quay. The walks are not well used or maintained so we battled through brambles and over-growth. The more popular, family friendly and sandy beaches are about 25-30min drive further south which is what we did most days. For us, Cwmtydu caravan site did not live up to its marketing and we didn’t share the welcoming and relaxing experience. Cardigan Bay is of course a wonderful place to visit and we would recommend that people look a little further south. We will not be visiting this site again.
