Beautiful spot

Lovely small CL in Sleights, so close to Whitby and surrounding areas. The hard standing pitch was good, modern electric hookup and water next to it. The views are outstanding and we spent some hours there watching the wildlife including a barn owl hunting in the field next to our caravan. A peaceful setting, especially since we had the site to ourselves all weekend! The only issue we head was poor communication from the owner. We received a confirmation email when we booked a few months ago, with our pitch number A148 on it. Sent the owner an email the week before arriving to ask if there’s anything we need to know…got no reply. Imagine our confusion when we got there and the pitches were numbered 1-6 😂 Luckily the gardener happened to be there so we asked and he said Just take number 1. We saw online that there was a shower available to book, but no instructions anywhere how to do this. I texted the owner on the contact number that specified ’texts only’ and got one back saying yes, but can’t sort til tomorrow. At 4pm next day I texted again asking for instructions and he came by and advised. The shower and adjoined toilet are newly built, not quite done but very nice already. We would’ve given 5/5 had the communications with the owner been better.

Get in quick before this site gets discovered.

Just spent 8 nights on site over May Bank holiday, we can't understand why it was not fully booked. We confirmed arrival time of 2 pm with Chris by email on leaving previous site and he was on site cutting grass when we arrived. Chris has cut strategic planning viewing windows in the hedge in front of pitches. We pitched nose in for an absolutely stunning view across and along the Esk valley. There is a tap on each pitch with electric that is charged at supply rate. We pre loaded the meter with £25 so for 8 nights the total price including pitch fee was still under £20 per night for what is virtually a fully serviced pitch. Other reviews have listed things to do in the area, we did cheat a bit and drove into Whitby to cycle the Cinder Track to Robin Hoods bay (parking is free in the road above the start if you get there early enough. We concentrated on our coastal tour, but the site is equally convenient for the Moors. Butcher, Baker, Post Office/Spar and fish and chips all within easy walking distance of site Another site on the must return to list.

4 Nights

The CL runs parallel to and below the quiet Grosmont road leading out of Sleights from which it is overlooked by housing. The site has two levelled sections. The furthest from the entrance and lowest is all hardstanding on which pitches 1 & 2 are located. The first higher section has two hardstanding tracks for pitches 3, 5 & 6 (5 & 6 nose to tail and 3 oblique to 6) along two sides of a shared rectangle of short grass. This provides space for awnings and sitting out. With all 3 pitches occupied it felt intimate. The grass also provides access to the CL’s recycling and water disposal point and is where pitch 4 is located which was not in use. All the hard standing including the access track is rough & bumpy crushed tarmac and stone. The pitch allocation board on the way in is not maintained. I was notified of our pitch number by text 30 minutes prior to arrival. I didn’t see this as I was driving so on arrival went in search of the owner. Later I found a sign stating that contact with the owner should only be by text. The owner has to come to the pitch to turn on the EHU before the £5 worth of electricity (12 kWh) can be used and to add more kWh in multiples of 12. Neither happens instantaneously and the owner told me he wouldn't come out at night to add units. A fine view across the Esk valley is obscured by a high hedge running along the site’s north western boundary. The site is very quiet and in July was sunny. It took us about 2 hours to walk into Whitby via the Esk Valley Walk and Ruswarp. We returned using the Sleights to Ruswarp road, which was quicker and easier. The road isn’t busy and has footways at each end and narrow verges along its length. The same road provides easy access to the ‘Cinder Track’ cycle and walkway that follows a disused RW line between Whitby and Scarborough via Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar. The cycle to Ravenscar and back from the site and via Whitby took me about 3 hours. We also walked from the site to the Falling Foss tea rooms. The best route we found was along Little Beck from Iburndale. We treated ourselves to an excellent fish and chips in Sleights where there is also a bakery, Spar, PO and butcher. There are good public transport links which we didn’t try.

Lovely views .....but

The views from the site are great. We were on the bottom pitches 1&2 and all gravel no grass around. Arrival time of 3.00 pm and departure time of 10.00am seemed a bit harsh though. By the time you have set up completed you have lost most of the first day!!!! Leaving in the morning means you have little time to get breakfast and pack away by 10.00am So for two nights price is £35.00 with no WC facilities seems high. Hope this is constructive criticism and the "rules" can be relaxed a bit.

Convenient site and quiet.

We enjoyed our stay at this quiet site. Bit confusing at start as we didn't know which pitch we had. Had hard standing pitch with a nice view over countryside with some sightings of trains. Facilities are excellent.Great to be able to see availability on a website. Thought it would have been nice to have a seating area nearby on grass. Very convenient for catching buses to Whitby and beyond, local bus to Grosmont ,Lealholme and the Coastliner to Pickering via Goatland. Radfords butchers and deli in Staithes is excellent. The meat, pork pie, ready meals and bread are too good to miss. Bothams bakery in village very good too.The fish and chip shop was better than being in Whitby. Perrys garden centre and cafe in Staithes worth a visit. Also the excellent shrub nursery in Lealholme. And of course the trains! A great break.

How it should be done

Fantastic site. This is fairly new location and has been carefully thought out. Everything is clearly labelled and neat. The online booking system is a great idea too. As someone else said, the water pressure is VERY high and burst our hose too! Take care.

Peaceful CL

We spent 6 nights here and have had a lovely time. Our pitch had spectacular views over the valley with the NY moors railway below. The local pub and chippy are both worth a visit There is a lot to do in the area and I hope we get the chance to return.

Great CL site

Just spent 7 days on this site and had a wonderful time. The owner Chris is very friendly and went over and above what we would expect from an owner. The site is new and has excellent views over Eskdale. Each pitch has its own fresh water tap and electric meter, which was great and all pitches also had their own electric vehicle charging point. Lots of wonderful walks close by and only 4 miles from Whitby. There is a fabulous butchers shop and Bothams bakery a 10 minute walk away and I can highly recommend Eskdale Fisheries for the tastiest fish and chips, comparable with any you can buy in Whitby. Will definitely return. Many thanks.

Good CL (BUT)

Stayed at this CL in June, the CL is new ,it has excellent views of the Esk valley the pitches are agood size, each pitch has it,s own water tap & electric is on a meter. Pitches 1 & 2 are hard standing other pitches are grass, we booked a pitch to be able to put our awning up but where put on pitch 1 unable to put large steel pegs in do to hard standing, also we used our aquroll with a water valve so we did,nt need to keep topping the water up, But the water pressure is very high & this burst the hose while we went out 1day, so we came back to a very wet pitch, this also happened to some one else on site, also if you have a caravan or large Motorhome when you leave have someone look out for you as the traffic coming from the right is unseen until you get out on the road.
