I can see for miles and miles

About half of the area of this site is continuous level hard standing so there is no difficulty in pitching, and there is plenty of space to not need to be too precise, with individual water and electric for each pitch. The other half is a level grassed area designated as “Children’s Play Area – No Dogs” which seems fair as the foreshore is only one small field away.

Access to the beach is easy but along a narrow track through natural grassland which includes nettle and thistle, so wellie boots are required. The beach stretches for miles in all three directions – the tide does go out so far you can’t see the water. It is very hard sand so walking, running and games rather than sand-castles. The tide comes in at over 20 feet a minute so being aware of when that happens is important.

One field away along the shore is a commercial static caravan site with a well stocked shop and beyond that a long walk to the nearest pub, though you can go most of the way on a tarmac road rather than the beach.

The outlook across the Solway is to the horizon, and the surrounding land is all flat. Do not be put off by the storage shed in the photo as it is a great wind baffle. There is a toilet, shower and washing machine available in a room in the shed, and a supply of basic necessities, fresh eggs, etc all on an “honesty box” basis.

Apart from passing through a farm when leaving Cummerstones the road is completely straight so although it is narrow and passing opportunities are few one can see oncoming vehicles about two miles away. The road into the site is also straight, and all surfaces are in good order.

Phone coverage is available but very weak as it comes from the other side of the Solway Firth and is dependent on the state of the tide for signals to reflect. Leaving the phone to its own devices hanging in the front window got email in and out but no browsing was possible.

A great place to just do nothing, but only a couple of miles from the A75 to rejoin the rat race.
