Not a good experience

(originally submitted June 2017) The site is divided into 2 areas, the first part is hardstanding pitches for 5 caravans or motorhomes, which is what appears on the photographs on the website. This area is spacious and surrounded by tall trees screening it but with no views. Through a gap in the side of the site there are 3 additional pitches with EHU and views, which seem better. All the 8 pitches were occupied nightly, and yet there is an old club sign as you enter the site that states that only 5 caravans are allowed. On the Saturday night loud music started from about 18:00 and continued until at least 04:00 on the Sunday morning. It was extremely loud and thumping, and even whilst sat inside the caravan with windows and doors closed we couldn’t hear our television above it. It was coming from the wedding venue property directly over the road from the CL. This was most unacceptable and not something we’re used to on a club site. Speaking to other members after our stay, we understand the loud music is not a one-off occurrence and others have experienced the same also. When I asked the owner about this next day he claimed no knowledge of it, nor responsibility in the noise levels for his site and was most unsympathetic. He became very defensive, intimidating and hostile, shouting at me. We have since learned that this has happened to others. Having stayed on a large number of CLs, we found this one to be the worst and quite substandard. We were told not to pitch on the grass. The hardstanding is not the usual stones. It is just hard ground with some hard and sharp areas, making it very uncomfortable to walk over standard caravan breathable awning matting with no shoes on. Pegs were incredibly difficult to get in for the awning and we had to leave several out in the hope of no strong winds. There are 2 toilets and a strange gassy smell in the ladies. The toilets aren’t very clean and full of cobwebs, filthy floors, and were subsequently underused. As you walk from the 5 pitch area to the toilets you pass the waste disposal area which has unpleasant smells, not normally found in CLs. This is another reason that the toilets seem to be underused. It’s a shame to have to report negatively but we have to be truthful in the reviews to help other members. I note a few old reviews of this site were good.

Busy but pleasant CL

A nice site with very easy entrance and exit. Roads to site are fine from either direction. The busiest CL we've ever stayed at with pitches in use the whole week we were there. There are 8 pitches, with at least 2 being used permanently. All are a good size, and have enough room for van, vehicle on hard standing & awning on grass. One does have less grass area, but van and awning fit on the hard standing, and there is parking opposite. Most pitches have slabs on them that if you use will help make your unit almost level side to side, but you will need blocks/ramps for front & back. Most pitches are lower at the front than the back. The 3 pitches over the back have views over the fields, the rest look out on grass & trees. Most pitches get the sun from first thing, and into the early evening. The main part of the site is well sheltered. There is some noise from the road, but it is not intrusive, and there is nothing at night. You can just turn up and pitch where ever there is a free spot, no need to knock at the house. Just go and pay when you are ready. We didn't pay until our last day, and it was not problem at all. It would probably be helpful for there to be a sign advising of this, though I did check before we arrived. The owners run a busy farm so you are unlikely to see them, but then why do you need to? There is a little hut with plenty of information for the area, plus a bus timetable. There is also a tourist information in Chesterfield. We had no problem with the electric, and neither did anyone else there. Ladies toilet was clean, and kept well stocked with toilet paper, hand towel and soap. Mens apparently was not quite as clean, but was kept well stocked. There is recycling on site, and all the services are together and easy to access. CC membership was not checked.

Location Good, but ...

Easy to find and the walk across to the reservoirs is pleasant.  Hardstandings but you still need blocks.  Our friends and their neighbours on the same EHU post had persistent problems with the EHU tripping.  Not their trip switches but the master one, so they could not access it to switch it on.  The owner implied each time it was their fault, but once they were not even in the van!  So avoid the first two pitches as you arrive on the left!  Toilet was neat and tidy but was not cleaned once in the 6 days we were there; the bin was overflowing.  No drive over grey waste disposal, so you need a bucket. However, the site is very peaceful.

Just lovely

This was our first outing in our van and it was just perfect. Very quiet and pretty surroundings. The loos were really clean. We had no problems with the EHU or the water tap everything worked perfectly. I thought it was really nice and very trustworthy that tge owners dont come and bother you for payment and you just get on with it and go and pay at the end of your visit. Spot on an we will definitely be coming again. Thankyou Bobby-Joe & Shane x

Just gets better.

Use this site as our local for a few years now only 30 mins from our home and has improved the facilities over the years. Now has 2 newly decorated toilets always plenty of loo roll etc . Amazing range of outdoor activities in the area and only 15 min drive from Chesterfield with bus service outside gate to town and towards Bakewell.Large pitches with plenty of room between each though don,t forget your leveling blocks after all it is Derbyshire !

Lovely quiet site, dog friendly

Access to site fine, pitches are all hardstanding but not always convenient for awnings.  The site is quiet, lots of birds, nice walks.  We found the loo warm, clean and fully equipped - a bonus. Very reasonable rates, pleasant owners.  Chesterfield had an unexpectedly good market and shops and the Church with the crooked spire is well worth a visit.  Buses pass by the site regularly to Chesterfield and Bakewell.  Very convenient for the Peak District.

Ease of arrival/welcome

Peaceful- but that's it!

We arrived for our 4 night stay on 17th Feb and expected to be greeted by the owners to show us the pitches available which sadly we weren't. After choosing our own pitch and setting up we still waited to be welcomed by the owners and to take our payment, but still there was no sign of anyone. The site itself is extremely quiet and peaceful with beautiful surroundings and the hard standing was a real bonus given the weather the previous week which left the grassy areas a bit muddy. This and the location were probably the best things about this site. Bad points: Only one water point for the entire site which was located under a sea of wet, rotten leaves which were very smelly and off putting. Electric hook up was poor and we had several black outs each day simply by operating the electric heating in our caravan and using basic appliances which are never normally a problem on other  CL sites. The on site toilet (which I used only once) was fairly clean and had a reasonable supply of toilet paper, had only a cold water supply, no hand towel and hand soap that had run out and the dispenser filled with water instead!! We also did not see evidence of any "night lighting"  around  the site as the owners have mentioned on the CC website. A bit of a disappointment and at the end of our stay we had to knock on the door of the owners house and make our payment. The owner had no clue who we were or how long we had stayed for which suggests they know little else about the needs of their guests. It would have been nice to have been greeted when we arrived, and to be asked during our stay if everything was ok. If these things had been addressed then we may have considered coming here again.

Cheerful Caravaners

Pleasant sight, leveling blocks required. loads of lovely places to visit. On the downside, the toilet was in need of a good clean,no toilet paper, only a cold tap and nothing to dry your hands with. I do think these things need to be looked at as it spoils a site which in all other ways is lovely

Quiet site close to Chesterfield and the Peak District

A really quiet site with good facilities. Sheltered from the wind. All hardstanding and good disposal points. Would have liked to have walked from the site but the week was very wet. Will visit again in the summer.
