Trains and more trains

Firstly we must agree with the numerous favourable comments about the pub and the delightful staff. The beer is excellent too. Also, it’s a great location for visiting Lincoln city and the nearby excellent nature reserve. The CL is located right next to a busy railway line and this can be both entertaining and incredibly irritating by equal measure. The trains can be every 5 to 10 minutes for most of the day and start at 05:45 each morning; finishing at about 23:30. We did have a freight train on our first night at 3am which was no fun especially given that our pitch was 10 metres from the line. I would recommend avoiding pitch number 1 as this is right on the boundary with the track. I estimate most trains to be travelling at 70-80mph so it is very noisy and therefore the CL is far from peaceful. We did ask on arrival if we could have pitch 4 or 5 but we’re declined despite 5 remaining unoccupied throughout our 4 night stay. I think future visitors should be made aware of the train situation beforehand as the reference made in the details does somewhat play it down.

Excellent friendly site

Stayed here in early March during the winter snows !!. The site has a very clean heated single shower toilet block. Whilst by a railway line, the trains are actually quite and did not disturb me at all. The staff in the Railway Inn were very welcoming, and proud of their pub. I stayed 2 nights midweek and the pub was busy. The food was excellent, including some local produce such as Lincolnshire sausages from a local butcher. I primarily visited the area being a keen aviation enthusiast. The Red Arrows are now based at RAF Wadding a few miles away, and there is the excellent International Bomber Command Centre. This is a memorial to those lives lost serving for Bomber Command. Right on the door step to the site is the large Whisby Nature Reserve, lakes and woodland walks. Included at the reserve is The Natural World Centre. Very easy to get into Lincoln by road through some lovely countryside. It was suggested to me that a short drive to the nearby Hykeham railway station, and take a train is best way to visit to save on parking fees.

Fantastic site and pub/restaurant

We have had a wonderful holiday at The Railway inn. The food at the pub is amazing (proper home cooked chips, which is very rare these days), the staff are lovely as are the owners who make you feel at home, they go above and beyond to please you. Plenty of walks for the dog, including the lake by the site. Very nice and clean facilities. Very spacious pitches. Secure gate so no need to worry about security. We visited Newark castle, and Lincoln castle and cathedral. We saw the Magna Carta too. We enjoyed it so much, we will be back again and again. It is so nice to find such a lovely place to stay. If I could give it a higher score I would do.

Great reak

The CL had recently changed hands on our visit in August 2021. The new owners could not do enough to make us welcome. The site is behind a great village pub with good reasonably priced food and friendly locals. I would recommend anyone seeking a quite break to look seriously at visiting here,

Not what we expected.

We booked for one night and when we arrived that morning the inn was closed so we called the number and spoke to a lady but she couldn’t help us or give us any information. Only carvery was available on Sunday lunchtime/afternoon and no food available in the evening. We were charged £15 for the night but the website states £8 and does not mention the additional £7! We were unable to locate the recycling facilities, the metal gate to the field was difficult to open and close and the broken lock sat on top of it! On the plus side we were told there was a lake behind the site by another camper, and the trains make it interesting. We would not recommend this site due to lack of communication and the overpriced fee.

Great site, warm welcome, lovely pub and food and easy access to Lincoln.

Great site, warm welcome, lovely pub and food and easy access to Lincoln. We stayed here on 4 July this year for the first time. Sites and pubs had just reopened after lockdown and we wanted to go somewhere fairly close, for a night to see if we would be comfortable venturing out during the Pandemic. We needn’t have worried as Carly and the Railway Inn had everything well organised to ensure all measures were taken to keep everyone safe. We returned last night and took advantage of the site, pub and food again. We “stole” our Daughter’s dog again as he loved it there on 4th. The site was a little busier this time with more dogs on site so Ronnie didn’t quite get the run of the field again but he still loved his walks around the lake. We had a lovely meal at the pub and settled back in the van for a lovely sleep before breakfast in the Motorhome and another walk around the lake. We love Lincoln and the Railway Inn and will be back again (with Ronnie obviously).

Great Railway Inn

Easy to find, lovely little site, very friendly welcome, no problem with the gate. Trains not a problem for me as live close to a railway line. Foot path runs along side site so easy for dog walkers, as this is a public footpath others use it and sadly do not always clean up after their dogs. I had an evening meal Saturday with a drink and coffee and on Sunday a Small Sunday lunch with a drink along with site fee the whole lot was £35 for the weekend. Overall very pleased, unable to comment of facilities used electric hook up but have own toilet and wash facilities. Well worth it.

A Fab New Yr.

Had a brill stay at the Railway yet again. So welcoming from Carly and Mick and the wonderful staff and locals. We ended up mixing with three lovely gents who made New Yrs eve what its meant to be. The music was ideal for all which Carly put on free gratis along with the lovely buffet. We will be back again beginning of Feb for a dogshow at Newark and then May BH. Thank you Carly and staff for making us so welcome AGAIN. Really enjoyed it. Happy New Yr to you all. Bryan & Ann. xx

Cheap and cheerful

The Railway Inn is a good little site. It’s a field behind a great pub with friendly locals and good choice of food. The price went up to £12.00 but club site not updated. The gate is somewhat difficult to cope with but once done keeps the site secure. The mainline from Nottingham to Lincoln and the east coast ports runs adjacent and there are up to 4 passenger trains an hour of either one or two car units. During the day we saw maximum 3 long goods trains. At night same again but unless you are really picky they won’t affect you. Earplugs worked for the boss. The staff at the pub are very friendly, know the area well and helpful. The site is straight forward, the pub with an outbuilding on the rear with a toilet and shower. We found it clean and well maintained. Our caravan has its own toilet and shower so no queues. Every day there is a special for £6.00. Main and a sweet. Excellent value. The regular menu goes from steaks to egg and chips. Drinks quite cheap as well. Great for a stopover or a few days. Park at the Waitrose to the north of Lincoln and use the bus pass friendly Park and Ride. 50p for the dog.

This C.L. Spoiled for us when a sixth outfit pitched up.

We received a warm welcome although we were not shown where any facilities were.It is a major problem when the W.C. is located within the wet room as this causes queueing particularly WHEN THERE ARE MORE THAN FIVE OUTFITS PITCHED.I note that this exceeding the five van limit was noted in another review. We were charged £12-00 per night but the website entry says £8-00. The wetroom is not well thought out as the fall is partly away from the shower drain and there is no mirror or shelf for cosmetics. The wetroom is not particularly clean or well maintained. There are several freight train movements throughout the night and these are fairly noisy, The metal gate to the field needed two of us to unlock and open it on departure and this might be tricky for solo caravanners. There does not appear to be recycling available. We are unlikely to use this C.L.again as we feel it falls short in several areas.
