A First Class CL - Do Give It A Go.

We have just spent two days and nights at the Steadings At the Grouse and Trout and feel we need to share the experience. Angelique and Rob have recently (June 21) acquired the Hotel and CL site but already seem old hands at all it takes to make the venture a success. On arrival you are invited to book in at the hotel reception. We were met by Rob who efficiently processed the booking and walked us to our plot, pointing out all of the services on the way. All plots are fully serviced: Electric Hook-up, fresh water tap and Grey Water drain. Plots are well spaced on two levels all looking out across grazing pasture to the moorland and hills beyond; the site was very peaceful. On the first evening we went to the hotel bar for a drink and met Angelique. She too was very welcoming and showed a genuine interest in her clients; asking where we had been, what we planned and general chit chat. The following night we booked in for dinner, pleased to learn there is a section of the restaurant where dogs are allowed. The menu is not extensive but where practical the food is locally sourced and seasonal, which appealed to our greening agenda. The fresh food is cooked for you in the kitchen, no pre cooked and heated meals. The quality is exceptional and the meal we had was up there with the best we have ever had. Taken in the round: the friendly helpful welcome; the location; site facilities; on site restaurant this is the best CL we have stayed in.

Under new management - a warm welcome.

We had planned to stay (22/06/21) and eat in the restaurant, however, new owners have just taken over and not quite set up for that yet. Lovely clean site, beautiful surroundings, and facilities well-organised. We had a lovely warm welcome, and will definitely return to sample food when the restaurant is up and running (25/06/2021).

Good place to stay for Culloden

We stayed here for a few nights in our motorhome whilst passing through the area in September. The hardstanding pitches all have their own water tap as well as EHU, which makes a slightly higher price than some other CLs acceptable It is part of a hotel, but we did not use the hotel bar or restaurant facilities, so cannot comment on them. The site is in quiet and hilly countryside, we are climbers and did some rock climbing nearby, overlooking a loch. We also found it quite convenient for visiting the Culloden battlefield site (a short drive). All facilities were good and clean. We would stay here again if in the area.

Stunning views

we spent 4 nights at the CL, it has stunning views down the glen, and some wonderful sunsets to watch, we were welcomed in a friendly manner, and shown where everything was, given information about the bar and restaurant, if we wanted a meal we had to book the day before which we thought a little strange, but as its in the middle of nowhere, with no passing traffic, I can see the reasoning. all the pitches have there own EHU, water and gray waist, the black waist and bins were in a lovely tidy area, over all it was a lovely site. the couple of down points, access is a little tight, we only have a small campervan, and we had to shuffle a few times to get the van into the position we needed for the driveaway awning, and the bar prices are a little on the steep side, and as you only pay at the end of the night, it comes as a bit of a shock when you get the bill. so the big question, would we stay again? yes we would, it gives good access to Loch Ness and surrounding areas, and it was a pleasant, well laid out site, each pitch with its own facilities, and great view down the glen.

recent stay

although the campsite was very nice and had a warm welcome we booked a table in the restaurant that is where it all went wrong for us at over £30 per head for 1 course meal we thought as we had booked the table we should stay and make the most of it we had burgers and chips , starters with 3 ciders it came to over £100 for 3 of us ok if it had been edible but the burgers where dripping with grease and tasted like they had been in the freezer far to long stale almost rancid we left most of our meal uneaten and as we would be staying there felt that we couldnt complain but if it had been anywhere else i would have refused to pay we felt ill after eating it

Ok stop over with good pitch

We had an over-nighter here and ate dinner at the hotel. The pitches are pretty good but we feel that this CL is somewhat overpriced. We were able to have a meal "if we ate early so as not to disrupt the hotel guests." The meal was acceptable, but on the pricey side. Better restaurants in Inverness are only about 16 miles away. We have a lot of experience towing on single track roads but the approach from the A9 is quite difficult with poor road quality, lack of passing places and twisty road with close in forestry. The locals seem to drive like rally drivers. If you are not confident on single track roads then consider that you will have about 7.5 miles of this before you access the site. We would return as a stop-over site on our way further North.

An Overnight Stop

We used the Steadings as an overnight stop on our trip up to the North Coast of Scotland. It was easy to find as was access to the site. We were greeted in an efficient manner but as we wished to pay by debit card it was pointed out to us that they had to pay charges for this and it was primarily for the use of their hotel customers. The access to the pitch was quite tight and we only have a small 2-berth caravan. The views are stunning and the facilities on the pitch are good.

A good spot which could have been even better.

Scenery around site fantastic. Pitches all hard standing with own water tap and grey waste point. Owner was ok but we had to extract local area info out of him; it was not automatically offered on arrival. Given that there was no loo on the site I think the campers could have been encouraged to use the loos in the adjacent restaurant/hotel even if access was only during agreed times. We were not encouraged to do so and the bar prices were expensive. Borderline expensive for what was on offer but great for Loch Ness and Inverness.

Great for Inverness, Loch Ness and the surrounding area

We were warmly welcomed on our arrival. The pitches are positioned so your outfit faces the beautifully views. Each pitch is serviced with a tap, grey water drain and electricity. The CL is compact and some pitches are not suitable for larger outfits such as twin axle outfits, so contact David or Mary before you book and arrive. The surrounding roads are quiet and ideal for cycling and there are a number of forest walks close by. Inverness is close by, as a number of other attractions.
