The Best of Bristol

The only problem with this site is you can hardly ever book a pitch, due to its well-deserved popularity. Ideal for trips into Bristol, either strolling along the harbour-side, or taking one of the numerous ferries. The pub next door, The Cottage, serves good ales and tasty food. We can also recommend the Grain Barge, directly opposite in the harbour. We will be back - providing we can get a pitch!

Ideal for a city visit

Visited last week for a 3 night stop with friends. We'd always wanted to stay here but found booking difficult, but the recent decision to stay open an extra season was useful as so few knew about it - so we got in. Truly brilliantly placed right on the towpath, about 400 yards from the SS Great Britain, less than a very-pleasant walking mile from the centre of Bristol (or there's a regular, ridiculously cheap ferry) - for a motorhomer in particular I can't think many sites could be better placed. The facilities are clean, a little old-fashioned, but fine, the wardens friendly -the pitches all hard standing, and with little greenery (no leaves either at this time of year) so the site is a little stark - but you don't stay here for the site but for the location. BUT - there are downsides. The lack of a dog walk is truly a pain; the very adjacent pub also doesn't take dogs (a fact I found astonishing, given that it must of necessity cut much of their potential evening meal trade - do they REALISE how many CC members own dogs?!); I've never heard quite so many police and ambulance sirens (though I'm a country boy - maybe I'm spoiled!). Overall, though, very good - but what really takes the biscuit is that the authorities AREN'T - as you might expect - intending to put housing on this absolutely prime real estate plot which would raise millions of pounds towards their no-doubt beleaguered budget, but a junior/primary school....my mouth fell open in disbelief. Go whilst you can - it's worth a visit - and wonder at the stupidity of those who should know better.

Wonderful site and lovely wardens

The site is an oasis in the city and ideally located for visiting with a motorhome. The Wardens are wonderful and very helpful (as they were at the Longleat Site when they used to work there). Such a huge shame the site is closing as I tried so hard last year to book in but it was completely booked up. Fingers crossed the Caravan Club will manage to locate another area in the city for it's members. Just a pointer but not a criticism of the Wardens but the Disabled shower is hopeless, if a moveable wheelchair ramp could be temporarily used then the main showers might be prove better.

Comment from The Club:

Many thanks for leaving a review. The warden has informed us that they have fitted a pump to the shower in the disabled facilities, which has resolved the issue. I hope this helps address your concerns and the wardens look forward to greeting you again soon. Once again thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

Superb

If you're poking for peace and quiet, it's not really the site to go to - but what a fabulous location for Bristol and the surrounding area. I very much hope the CC can keep it and the Council see sense. I remember going here as a child and it was special then and special for my return as a grown up.

Broken hearted

It was with an extremely heavy heart that we left this site. We feel privileged to have been able to stay here several times and each time have found new things to see and do as Bristol is such a wonderful city and the site is in such a marvellous location. I like others hope the council comes to their senses and realises that the income lost each year from this permanently full site will far out-way the short term gain of selling off the land for flats as let's face it, this is not a place for a school. I would have thought any council would feel honoured to have such a special attraction that can be used all year by so many. Please, please save this site!! We so hope that we will see it again.

Gutted it's going!

Probably our last visit to a brilliant site. Given the amount of derelict land  around the old warehouses I would have thought the club and the council could come up with something. The local businesses will certainly suffer a loss especially, the Cottage Inn and the Ferry. Very sad.

A fantastic situation

We are just back from Baltic Wharf having spent five days there. What a fantastic situation. The only way to enter the city is by boat! The ferries run every forty minutes and the staff on them were delightful and full of ideas for our visit. We also walked into the city and came back by boat, visited the markets and the science museum (@Bristol) which was great fun. We must try to keep this site so that every one can enjoy it. Having said this of course the site is apparently full until August but we spoke to several people who had got in on cancellations so it is well worth phoning. Good luck, you'll love it.

Caravan Club Fight to save this fabulous site please!

We have visited Baltic Wharft at least twice every year for the last 10years. We love the back door onto the harbour side, the lovely ride on the ferry to the City centre. This is our favourite site and we can not comprehend life in future without it. Please Caravan Club HQ fight hard to save it. Buy the site if you have to! The shortsightedness of Bristol Council to loose all the revenue from visitors direct to local businesses by taking back the site is madness. Most councils would rejouce at the Tourist revenue. Surprise us and tell us you have saved the site, please.

Too good to let go

Are my standards for 'peace and quiet' and 'good for families' lower than for other people? - possibly. I certainly did not find noise an issue on the site or nearby but then I do live in a city centre. And there are so many interesting things for families to do, as well as adults.  If you were going to design a new site, surely it would look something like Baltic Wharf! Not perfect for a primary school but brilliant for a campsite. Right in the middle of so many other leisure activities and businesses. Local residents and businesses are on the side of a the site remaining here. And Bristol's ferries must benefit from the passengers. Negotiating may be hard but surely worthwhile for this site which is nearly always fully booked whenever you want to stay. That says so much for campers' point of view.

For us it's perfection.

While the site is probably not ideal for younger children and yes there is a lot of city noise [well it is in a City], for us the location, standards and facilities are perfect and we shall certainly miss it when it closes. :-(
