A pleasant break at an interesting, well designed and maintained caravan site

This is a very nice site. and the location alone makes it worth a stay. Historically it was a limestone quarry, and nearby in the Country Park are remains of lime kilns that turned limestone into lime mortar. The site was developed into a campsite, by the size of the trees, I would guess no more than 30 years ago. A lot of wildlife has come back and made homes within spaces in the rock faces, so bring binoculars. So, a campsite set within a nature recovery project, set within a country park, near Buxton (half hour walk through the country park) very central to the spectacular Peak District. The facilities are excellent, the wifi not bad. Staff at all times polite and helpful. What's not to like?

Great peaceful retreat with fabulous woodland walks for dogs

Just spent four nights on this site and can’t recommend the wardens enough. From our first arrival we were greeted with smiles, patience and useful information that really helped us make the most of our stay. Whilst we were there 50 vans turned up one Friday and the wardens were still smiling at the end of it - well done. The facilities were very modern and immaculately clean. The site is well laid out and despite rain there was no puddles or flooding. There was only 2 adults and a dog in our party, so I’m not sure about facilities for children, but I didn’t see any (hence my 3 star rating) but the woodlands were full of places to explore and build dens. The other side of the woodlands from the site is also a Go Ape for the adventurous traveller. Buxton itself is worth a visit with lots of great places to eat and shop but it’s a fairly long uphill walk back. The pet shop in the middle of town has great natural treats our pup had never tried before. Great place, just a shame it’s too far away for us to travel except for big holidays.

One night stay.

Stayed at the site for one night recently. Guy who booked us in wasn't very pleasant, didn't point out the electric points etc. Lots of tent's on the site. Lovely walk in to Buxton and really good taxi service agreement the site have with the local taxi firm. Wifi isn't brilliant due to the location. Clean facilities, did notice a lot of notices up stating "staff only" "try and use your own facilities if possible"

Second stay at this site and glad to see everything open.

The site was very busy as one would expect in August yet it was very quiet. This was the first visit in our new camper van and we found the pitch and water points easily accessible. The site is ideal for walking on the hills or in to Buxton. Being located in the quarry provides some protection from the wind. There is an openness about the site which we liked. Information still limited on site.

We will return

Lovely week at Buxton CMAC site. We only live just over an hour away and this was our first visit! Well laid out site with lots of little cul de sacs and bays to choose from, we were on the serviced section over the little bridge, nice and quiet, no passing traffic. Staff as usual pleasant and friendly, big shower block, all open now and very clean. Given lots of info when checking in, site info, local area and walks. Well stocked shop, chip van on Saturday and Curry on Thursday. We visited Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne, Castleton and surroundings. The country park next door is excellent for dog walking, there is a path to walk down through the woods to Buxton. We will certainly be back

Peaceful and different

Buxton site is very different with you being down in a disused quarry. The site wardens were hard at work maintaining the site and making a new Bug Garden. We were given a pitch which was not suitable for our motorhome and Yvonne couldn't have been more helpful and allocated us a new pitch of our choosing. The walk up to Solomon Temple is easily accessible from the site, as well as the woodland walks. Shop has lovely baked goods delivered on a daily basis, and there is a fish and chip and curry night during each week though we did not try these. The site and facilities are spotless, someone previously mentioned about children on bikes, scooters which we also encounter and someone was flying a drone from the bottom end of the site which was not ideal. But otherwise a pleasant site with easy access to the local amenities and walks.

Buxton site

Big site. Clean & new facilities. Central for Derbyshire towns etc. Pitches getting overgrown with weeds. No where for kids to play so riding scooters, cycles, skate boards and playing badminton & football on the roads. Rules not being adhered to. Speeding vehicles, two cars on some pitches? Vans not lined up on pegs. Fish & chips & curry van Saturday & Thursday. Have had better. Jackdaws in the cliff, make a lot of noise first light & last thing in the evening. I think they are discussing where they are off foraging & what it was like after. Get used to them. Otherwise a nice site.

This site just gives you a big hug

We love this site, can’t put our finger on it exactly but a combination of location, Buxton town, the fabulous views, the walk to Solomons Temple the cycling upto Peak View and the staff who are friendly, engaging, helpful and just love being here too. We have visited twice this summer already and will be our ‘go to site’ in the Peak District. Oh as well as Chatsworth of course! Thank you Buxton team for making the site just work.

Lovely site - shame about some of the guests

We were booked on here from 21st to 28th July and were lucky enough to find a lovely pitch with a great view. At the start of the holiday, everything was perfect but as the days went on, with people leaving and new people arriving, the whole ambience of the place changed from one of serenity to one of mayhem. The people either side of us were absolutely fine but some of the people in other units showed a total disregard for the rules and a lack of common courtesy one would hope to find on a CaMC site. Firstly, there were a few units with music that was clearly audible from our pitch. Secondly, there were children riding bicycles at break neck speed around the site wherever they wanted - including between the pitches. At times, the road resembled a race track and we were worried that it was only a matter of time before there was an accident as there had already been a couple of toddlers fall off their bikes. We didn't dare intervene and we didn't report this to the wardens because we know they can't do anything unless they witness it happening. We just left site earlier than planned as we couldn't stand being there any more. I realise that we were on the site in the school holidays and that everyone has been cooped up at home for a long time but there is no excuse for making other people's lives a misery. Unfortunately, I suspect that most of the problems were down to non-members who probably won't read this review and have no idea that their behaviour isn't what is expected on a CaMC site.

Well positioned location for town and walks straight from the site!

Not often we can enjoy the sunshine we had this last weekend when in the Peak district which only added to the delight of our recent stay. Site is in a good location and handy for walks etc as mentioned in the site details. Facilities are modern, spacious and were kept very clean. The band system worked as well as members being able to remember what to do! Thankfully from this week, normal service will be resumed! As with a number of sites, pitch and surrounding areas are not quite up to the standard pre-covid which is not surprising, with lower staff numbers etc but then how many local councils are using 're-wilding' to cover a reduction in maintenance? Nothing at Buxton looked amiss and the extra vegetation does encourage the wildlife and of course the site enjoys wild orchids in certain locations. Mark and the team were very welcoming and extremely helpful on our visit and a real credit to the club. We won't hesitate to visit again later in the year.
