A pity about the island hard standings

The welcome I received was second to none. The resident wardens were fantastic, friendly and extremely helpful. I was lucky to be camped on a hard standing that was adjacent to the pathway. However, there are several hard standings that are situated away from the pathways. This means that you have to walk over 2 - 3 metres of grass to reach your outfit. Not a problem in the dry season but be prepared these do get muddy in bad weather. The toilets and showers were very clean. Information shed was well stocked with all the leaflets and timetables you will need whilst staying on this wonderful site. If you can't find what you are looking for, the wardens are only too pleased to help. There is a bus stop to take you into town within easy walking distance. The rail station is on the bus route. It is a very cycle friendly city. It is approximately 3 miles flat walk or cycle ride into the town. There are many restaurants (10 minutes), pubs with food (5 minutes), shops (10 minutes), take-away(10 minutes) all within easy flat walking distance. I enjoyed my stay during February and will return in April.

The overall scores DO NOT reflect my views on this site. For some reason I cannot alter the scoring. Overall 4 stars, 5 stars for cleanliness,

Nice peaceful site within easy reach of Cambridge centre

We have stayed here a few times travelling from France in our motorhome to visit family in Cambridge. The site is open all year ( the only club site in Cambridge that is) so was handy for our visit over the Christmas holidays 2019. ( sorry we missed the drinks on New Year’s Eve) The site is very quiet and far enough away from Cherry Hinton to not be affected much by light pollution so the night sky, when clear, is beautiful, if only other visitors wouldn’t leave their caravan outside awning lights on all night it would be much nicer, and darker!!!!! The wardens are friendly, the facilities clean, pitches adequate and the rabbits numerous! We always enjoy our stay here.

Fantastic site in Cambridge

Just back from this great site near Cambridge. Facilities are very good and if you are on hard stading and don't need to cross the grass to get to your pitch all very good with a lovely layout. Very helpful relief Wardens who despite only being there a few days gave us lots of good advice. The location is excellent for Motorhomers with 2 pubs, bus stops and a Tesco express close by. The train station is about 2 miles away and if you pick your trains carefully the costs for two adult returns to Ely was £4.80 !

Good city site

Just had two nights at cherry Hinton site and have to say I can't really fault it. Showers and toilets very clean, the wardens (relief) were very friendly. The site was quiet, it wasn't full so we could choose our pitch. There were a few pitches that could do with improvement to reduce the risk of mud in wet periods, but plenty of hardstanding. We took the bikes and cycled in to Cambridge and it was great, must be the best city in UK to cycle, 3.5 miles to the centre. We will be back.

Great site

the site is on different levels - all tarred roads. Worth taking a walk through the site to choose your pitch. Went in January- cold but there were no water logged pitches. Surprised to see the number of motorhomes and caravans at the site. Pitches for tents is the first on the right. We had a hard standing (with awning), so a decent size. Not sure if any pitches are serviced. The road running by the side of the site can be busy at office times so pitches on the right (as you come in) are quieter. Single toilet block, up to the CMC standards. There is a Tesco express in Cherry Hinton with 2 pubs and 2-3 restaurants - all 700ish meters away from the site. Bus stop is close by too. The warden is very helpful. Don't forget to pull-up on the right, next to the barrier, to check-in.

Awning sites are too small, plus extra pitches squeezed in between plots!!! in!!!

We booked an awning pitch on hardstanding. Well the pitch was over a muddy patch that you had to paddle through to get to the hardstanding. Then the pitch size..... We pay more for a pitch with awning but it wasn't big enough for the car, awning and caravan! The non awning spaces were no smaller. We had to put the car in front of the awning, which made it a squeeze to get in but there was no point in even trying to fit the car on the "normal" side of the caravan to park as THERE WAS ANOTHER CARAVAN!!!! Which also meant the car was in the mud so we were paddling again!! The worst though, and I kid you not, squeezed in between plot 1 and 2 was this other caravan and car!! We were in 2 and It was horrible, felt like a goldfish bowl. We thought it may just be stored there as the site seemed to have a folding camper being stored in the car park but no it was in use! It was empty a couple of days them someone turned up. We ended up just leaving the blinds shut!!! So in short... Small spaces..extra caravan crammed in between plots... Hard standing has mud/grass in front....oh and it's not even a cheap site. Probably okay with a small van and no awning but I'd still avoid.

Non awning pitches well below par

This is a small, friendly site and if you book a hardstanding pitch with awning you are fine. However the non awning pitches, priced the same, are not fit for purpose. They are “islands” in the grass, not connected to the roadway. We stayed this autumn and the compacted soil between the pitches and the road was standing in water in virtually every case. So, keeping footwear and thus the caravan dry and mud free was a thankless task. It also looked unsightly, unkempt and tatty- not very CMC at all. We could see no good reason for this design feature. We also felt that being charged the same as awning pitches was a rip off.

Great site

Chose this site as was close to home to try out new Motorhome. Easy to find. Usual clean facilities. Not a huge site. Bus stop very close (great for Motorhomers) into Cambridge city centre which has lots of shops. Robin Hood pub by bus stop, food & drinks great. chalk pit opposite to walk round, great for dogs. Will definitely visit again next year.

Time to end the with/without awning (without extra charge) system!

Very busy, so little choice. pity there is the 2 tier, "with or without awning system". We only had a small porch and could easily have fitted us and it on to a non-awning pitch. Friendly, helpful welcome and because the site was also full advised as to which pitches were still vacant. We were asked if we were really going to put an awning up. "Yes", so directed to choose from the few remaining. The site is on an old quarry and is very shady, so choice as far as we were concerned was down to one, a non-shady area, with enough space for van and awning, but not the car or we would block access to another pitch. We were able to park just across from the pitch, tucking the car in behind the "service point." Our pitch provided an un-restricted "line of sight" towards the best TV transmitter, so we were able to get a good TV picture using our van aerial. Annoyingly, we missed a nice pitch by minutes, pity they were not asked the same "awning question", they took the last large pitch and did not pitch an awning!!!! Errrrr! A reviewer notes- no need to worry about narrow roads. Well, Lime Kiln Road, if you are approaching from the south, west and the M11, is narrow. Two wide vehicles will struggle to pass each other. The road so narrow, that in places the bank has been worn away, and the "revealed "gully", filled with concrete.

Lovely smaller site

Arrived fairly late but were warmly welcomed and advised of our allocated pitch as site was full. Nice to have site on good sized roads and no worry about narrow lanes and something coming in the other direction! Easy setting up with nice level ground. Really lovely site with lots of little lanes with limited pitches off main drive which made it feel more private and special. Very nice facilities but some sites down a slight slope so need to be aware of needing to climb a little to get to toilet block. Really liked the site and will return as had a very easy going feel and great for it's access to Cambridge.
