a jewel but some things to be aware of

First visit to Carsington Water and found a jewel. Although quite a large site the pitches are in smaller areas surrounded by pine trees so when pitched the site doesn't feel large. The facilities are among the very best in the network and everything is maintained to a very high standard by the wardens. There are perhaps a few minor negatives which others may wish to know. The site is on a continuous slope from bottom (where entered) to top. The toilet block is in the middle. Unless pitched close to the toilet block the walk either to or from the toilet block is uphill. The pitches themselves are mostly not flat. And due to the pine trees surrounding the pitches most either don't receive sun until later than expected in the morning, or lose the sun earlier than expected in the afternoon. On a wet day the site can feel darker than a more open site would be. But these minor negatives are more than compensated by the standard of the facilities and general ambience, as well the close proximity of the reservoir. (Circuit is perfect for pre-breakfast run.) There are several National Trust properties within easy driving distance, Kedleston Hall perhaps being the closest and worth a visit.
