Good for families

Unwelcoming for families

We stayed here recently with our 9 year girl and six year old boy. We were made to feel very unwelcome by the people staying there (not the people who were running the site) who tended to be older than us. Our children were shouted at constantly for riding their bikes around the site by one man from the door way of his caravan and also got told off for playing with a small bouncy ball by another. It frightened him so much that my 6 year old refused to leave the motor home. The atmosphere ruined the weekend for us which was a shame as we were looking forward to going to the local food festival. My advice would be to make this adult only if the type of people we encounted are regulars.

Whether you feel their reaction was justified or not, clearly your children annoyed the other campers.

Were you actually supervising your young ones when they were cycling? To my mind, that particular site holds dangers for kiddies racing around on bikes with the concrete and tarmac and course vehicles about. Let’s face it, it’s not really an ideal child friendly site.

My wife and I have just got home (5/7/2018) from staying overnight on the site, having stayed there on our way to Devon on 20/6/2018. We found the site very friendly and were made to feel very welcome by the wardens who helped us change a booking so that we could stay last night.

It is a quiet, spacious and well maintained site, ideal as a stop-over or for a longer stay, but it is rather stark, being mainly tarmac, and so not really ideal for a family with small, lively children.

Dear TinWheeler

We are very responsible with our children - they are however children and therefore like to explore a site when they first arrive. That’s the nature of being a child you want to run and have fun. I am also very mindful of other people and therefore always make sure they are not being a nuisance.

I have been contacted by another family saying they had the same experience so my advice still stands - if you have children this isn’t necessarily the most appropriate site.

We have stayed on the race course several times and as a site it is ideal for exploring the area ,but not good for ball games especially as it is mostly tarmac on the side of a hill,as you will have noticed, it is not an area that is conducive for children to play even if, which would be unusual ,for children on cycles to ride slowly,on the site, undecided,

Dear JVB66,

They were on the bottom of the site where it was flat. I don’t have any issue with the facilities or the site as an adult only location. My point is that it’s not an ideal family location - partly due to some of the issues you pointed out in your reply.

I wasn’t made aware of that before we booked so to save other families from potentially a similar experience I thought it was worth posting a review.

You haven’t answered my question of whether you were supervising your children as they cycled around. I suspect not as other vanners would surely have epoken to you rather than your children if that was the case.

I did say that site isn’t ideal for children and holds dangers for them if they are cycling or running around. We agree it is not a child friendly site. In fact, it’s far from it. I hope you have better luck with your future site choices.

Maybe you've not read the site rules lately. Here are some extracts which may help.

3b. If you have children with you on the site, you are responsible for their supervision.

3c. No one wants their outfit damaged, so ball games are not allowed near the pitches. Please ask the site staff if there is anywhere suitable to play ball games.

13 b. Bicycles, skateboards, scooters and roller skates are allowed on sites although, of course, consideration should be shown to other visitors. No cycling or skating is permitted on site between the hours of dusk and dawn, as determined by the site staff. Please observe any no cycling signs on site, such as around toilet blocks, and ensure that children are supervised at all times. Remember that the principles of road safety should be observed and special care should be taken when cycling onto and off roadways. Please ask the site staff about designated cycle routes nearby

PS. The fact that there is no childrens' play area on this site might have given you a clue about its suitability for children.

Hi Tinwheeler,

Yes I was supervising my children as you can see from my first post my little boy spent the rest of the stay when we were there in our motor home. Not the actions of child who disrespects adults!!!!!

I didn’t see those stipulations when I booked but this stay was a while ago. Thanks for pointing them out. The whole purpose of this post was not to be rude but to simply let other families know this site isn’t probably the best location for them if they want their children to be able to play (even supervised).

I’m puzzled by your statement of supervising your children yet you allowed them to be near enough to someone for him to constantly shout at them.

I quoted from the site rules which are on this website - follow the link - and in your handbook. They are not new and they are what you signed up to when you joined the club. Surely everyone reads the rules/T&Cs of an organisation they are joining?

Thanks for pointing out the site isn’t the best for children but, tbh, I think most will have worked it out from the pictures, site plan and lack of childrens' play area.

Oh dear me, Really? A ball can take momentum and roll and a child willl follow it. Rest assured I haven’t got time for further dialogue about this - I have to supervise my children. You and I have made the point that this isn’t a suitable site for children.

I think what you mean to say "this site is suitable for most families with children" wink
