Good for families

Very depressing

This site is mostly under trees, the ones in the open are mostly taken up by seasonal members. We had little choice of pitch. We had booked 2 nights, but in the morning it was pouring with rain and being under trees was made so much worse, we left after 1 night. It is unfair for the best pitches to be used as caravan parks when the owners are not there.

Hi lorrainemel.

May I make a few friendly observations regarding your review of Clachan, please?

This site is mostly under trees, It is described as a woodland site, and the photographs of the site show this. You do get a good deal of light in Spring & Autumn, but there can be a fair amount  of shade in the Summer.

the ones in the open are mostly taken up by seasonal members. That's not strictly accurate, I'm afraid. Some of the seasonal pitches are in the open, but some are also under tress. There are a number of non-seasonal pitches that are in the open.

We had little choice of pitch. It's a popular site for people wanting a quiet, woodland setting. It does get busy on occasions.

We had booked 2 nights, but in the morning it was pouring with rain and being under trees was made so much worse, It's Scotland. I'm afraid it DOES rain, but that's what makes it so green! smile

we left after 1 night. It just didn't suit you. We're all different.

It is unfair for the best pitches to be used as caravan parks when the owners are not there. Trust me, the seasonal campers are there as much as they can be. We'd be there all summer if we could.

I totally get that Clachan is a quiet wee place, and if you're expecting a "normal" site with facilities, it's going to be a bit of a shock to find almost none. Especially as you've come an awful long way up from Oxfordshire. But, it's a far from depressing site. The very "lack' of facilities is why lots of people love it. Some people want lots of things going on, and some are happy to sit, chill out, drink wine and watch soggy birdies...

I hope that you read this in the friendly spirit it was written in, and sincerely wish that you find a more suitable spot for you & your motorhome next time you're in Scotland. Haste ye back.

cool

It is obvious that this site is in "the wrong place" for the reviewer. However, in their wisdom The Caravan Club have provided another site almost one half of a mile away, practically treeless, flat, hardstanding, few seasonal pitches and opposite a rather nice pub.

I wonder why the original poster just did not go there?  In case the Site Directory was letting them down, it is titled Maragowan.

I am fairly confident that the OP did in fact go to Maragowan on the edge of Killin village. Clachan itself has no reception, you actually check in at Maragowan and they give you the code for the Clachan site which is a short distance up the hill. We found Killin and the surrounding area very pleasant indeed and it is in fact one of only a few places we have been to more than once.
