Amazing site - but with caveats

So the layout of this site is amazing - I've not experienced a site like it before. A variety of pitch types and locations spread across a hill leading down to the lake. On arrival the wardens will give you an idea of which area might suit you best. Facilities are brilliant and there is a large van on site providing fish and chips and pizzas amongst other things (pre-book only - on the day) We had great fish and chips on the Friday night. Convenient - the nearest pub (The Ship) is a 20 minute walk (and Coniston village 30 minutes).

Lets talk about the big issue though - access. Read the instructions - there is only one recommended route in (from the south), and that is still a challenge. Read the reviews by others about what happens if you are unfortunate enough to meet a bus or lorry or caravan on the A5084 between Lowick Green and Torver. We got in and out OK because we didn't meet anything - and we left at 0730 on the Sunday partly because of the torrential rain we'd had since Friday pm, and partly after worrying the whole weekend about the return journey. Someone apparently managed to get in from Ambleside - to this day I've no idea how they got away with it. Note also that you can arrive from 1000 and leave by 1200. Not imposed by the site itself - this is local authority requirements because of the road. What that means in practice however is that if you plan to arrive between 1000 and say 1230, the odds of meeting a rig coming the other way are vastly increased. I don't think many sites have this potential overlap. We planned our arrival for the "standard" 1300+ for this very reason.

Finally - if it rains - and we know it does in the Lakes - being under trees is no blessing. After the rain has stopped, the water continues to fall in accumulated amounts from the tree canopy. We didn't sleep for 2 nights. There must also be an increased risk of damage from falling branches in high winds (which we also had during our stay). Don't get me wrong - this is a tremendous site but one which I think favours motorhomes not caravans.

I wouldn't come in with a motorhome towing a trailer either. That being said, people do - we saw not only very large motorhomes, but also ones towing trailers and cars. Brave souls.

If I had a motorhome I'd not hesitate to return - but towing a caravan? Not again thank you.
