EXCELLENT ARRIVAL PROCEDURE AT FAIRLY GOOD SITE

We returned to Hawes after a 6 year absence. Approaching from the South West and based on past experience of the A684, we used the B6255 from Ingleton which is a quieter road, wide enough and with good visibility of narrow bridges, etc. The arrivals procedure was excellent and should be considered by other busy sites. Early arrivals were required to queue until about 12:50 when one or two wardens came out to check your booking and quickly move you on to let you find your pitch. OK, those arriving an hour early got first pick of the vacant slots but at least they were not enjoying a leisurely lunch as you wrestled with your awning! Once located you went to reception to pay, etc, and those who couldn’t find their membership card, or credit card, or wanted to chat about the weather, the journey up, etc, etc, could you do so without delaying access to the site for everyone else. The new facilities block is excellent with plenty of loos, showers, etc, and mixing taps on the sinks (hoorah!) and a drying room for kit (not washing) which should also become standard on new facilities blocks. Few reviews mention the excellent games room which we had to ourselves every evening (table tennis, pool, etc). On the negative side, there are perhaps only a dozen really nice pitches, divided between white and (mainly) blue pegs. Other pitches are fairly crammed in with pitch markers in the corner of the hard standing so everyone is nose to nose across the narrow roads and those with an awning have to site unit/awning/car with not much room for anything else. The Information Room was disappointing - a wall mounted OS map is a must together with a few pointers for local walks. A single facilities block on such a busy site is a bit of a disappointment but being able to use the disabled washroom for ‘emergencies’ during cleaning was much appreciated. We had limited contact with the wardens (just how we like it) but on each occasion they were very pleasant, cheerful and helpful.
