Quiet site in woodland setting

This was our first time at the Club's Kendal site. It is very similar in character to Coniston Park Coppice, hard standings spread amongst a number of seperate areas within the heavily wooded site. It's not the easiest site to find your way around or to select your pitch on arrival, particularly if you have a large unit. Care is also needed on the final approach road to the site as it is narrow and quite heavily potholed. Navigating to the site for the last mile (from the A591) is no problem though, as there are large and very clear Caravan Club signs at key junctions. The wardens are very friendly and helpful and keep the site in good condition. The facilities are clean and well maintained. However, my partner reported that there are no windows in the ladies' facilities in one of the blocks. This meant there was little effective ventilation and everything got damp and steamed up, particularly at busy times. Not a good situation in the current climate (i.e. Covid infection prevention). This is the reason we have scored the 'Facilities and cleanliness' as a 3. Other than this, the facilities were well maintained by the wardens and the score is no reflection on their efforts, as the problem is outside their control. There are a number of walks from the site and the old gunpowder works and adjacent river add character. Kendal is a couple of miles away and well worth a visit. For serious hill walkers, the Kentmere horseshoe is about a twenty minute drive away. Oxenholme railway station (on the west coast main line) is a fifteen minute drive away (best approached through Kendal I would suggest). Access to Windermere and Ambleside is easy, approximately 6 miles and 8 miles respectively along the A591 The site is not the best if you like sitting in the sunshine, as many pitches see little sun due to the trees (although this is what you would expect on this type of site). There are not a lot of grassed areas either. Take care when parking near some of the trees as they have berries on which 'bleed' and stain your unit (not easy to remove). Overall, a good site, well looked after by excellent wardens but not one we would come back to other than for access to southern Lakes hill walking.
