Lucksall, a site with a difference

When choosing a site, newbies like my wife and I could be forgiven for sticking to the usual favourites such as Devon, Cornwall, The Lakes, The Cotswolds and perhaps if feeling more adventurous, Scotland (next year perhaps) but when deciding upon an end of season location to use up the last of the wife’s summer leave allocation (she still won’t retire) I was taken by the reviews for Lucksall Camp site. Lucksall Site is about 4 miles east of Hereford situated on the river Wye between the villages of Mordiford (some mischievous person has altered the sign to ‘Mordor’ al la Lord of the Rings). We arrived during a heavy downpour and were greeted by a friendly warden who rather than having us get out and get wet brought out a map showing where our allocated pitch was. The pitches are a mixture of hardstanding and grassed, we had been allocated a hard standing pitch all the pitches being a good size which having an 8m van (well 7.98m to be exact) is a welcome relief. The site is immaculately kept with shrubs abounding, well planned and clearly popular with a variety of campers. Having set up we were keen to eat it been tea time by now…the onsite café is a joy, clean tidy well set out adjacent to the river next to the reception and shop. As a fan of real ale I was delighted with the vast array of local beers, may I recommend Shropshire Lad and Butty Bach as my two favourites of the week. The food is of equally high standard and compares favourably with that supplied by the local pubs (more on those later) during the weekends especially Friday and Saturday nights it is advisable to book so as not to be disappointed. The cooked breakfast made cooking in the van a little pointless. The riverside pitches are large and scenic but be aware that there are fishing pitches on the river at the back of your pitch which would mean fishermen walking past to do their days fishing. The area is littered with castles, stately homes and gardens to visit. We visited a number of places during the week. Ledbury a lovely market town with a castle and some fantastic butchers who make the best pies and sausages ever. Hay on Wye great if you like books the place is full of old book shops and a castle. Goodridge Castle is well worth a visit, the views from the top of the keep over the Wye valley were very impressive. The local scenery is beautiful lovely rolling hills, valleys and forests this is an area sadly overlooked and worthy of a visit. Close by are a number of pubs, of these the Moon stands out. Situated about 800 m from the camp the small 16th century pub extends a warm welcome, dog friendly, good food and real ale.  In Fownhope there is the New Inn also dog friendly however they only do evening meals on certain nights but a good lunchtime menu. Out towards Holme Lacy you will find The Bunch of Carrots another good country pub, dog friendly, good food and a good range of beers and ciders. Near to the site there is a 200 acre woodland excellent for walks and a brilliant places for kids to go explore and make as much noise as they like. Back to the site, the facilities include Wi-Fi however this is only when you are up close to the reception it does not extend further down the camp plus it’s slow, very, very slow there being no fibre optic in the locality yet. Overall this is a really nice site, the staff are friendly and helpful (thanks for sorting out the satellite dish and getting a good signal for sky sports…godsend) it is also nice to be on a site where the rules are actually enforced…no more needs to be said on that front… would we return? Yes but next time I would be asking for a pitch away from the kids play area.Have a care when driving to the site if coming from the north, there is a primary school on the road into Mordiford and woe betide anyone attempting to drive past the school when it’s dropping off or picking up time…avoid these times like the plague.
