Yet another visit !

This was our second visit this year - the contrast between Storm Katie at Easter and the weather this time in late May being very marked, as we had truly gorgeous weather for all six nights we were here. One of our favourite sites, we have to say that this year the pitches and the site generally looked as good as we've ever seen them - friendly wardens, emerald green grass, beautifully mown, showing off the pitches to perfection. The toilet block - spotlessly clean if perhaps a little dated now - the dog walk area - well placed and a pleasure to use; children's play area well attended; site shop and information booth both excellent. Nearest dog friendly beach is Porthcurnick, just up over the hill (a earlier reviewer obviously didn't know this and it might be an idea to put up a sign in the shop?) though parking is difficult unless you use the public car park on the road to Portscatho - it's also the location of "The Hidden Hut" - which WAS nicely hidden until Caroline Quentin told everyone about it on tv! - and we also discovered that the truly STUNNING beach at Carne is dog-friendly too - in theory you have to leave Fido on a lead between 9am and 6pm but if the dog's in the water, I wouldn't worry - nobody did! I can't think there are two better beaches in Britain for small children, either. St Mawes - picture post-card, a little Hooray-Henry on occasion (it's a very wealthy place) but there's no better place to sit for a pint; the ferry to Falmouth from St Mawes was just fantastic and we loved it. Next time we'll go from Trelissick Gardens (great riverside dog walk) upriver on the ferry to Truro. Try walking out beyond the St Mawes Castle around the headland and you'll find a little gem of a beach right off the car park (you'll have to find the little track to it) - virtually deserted, dog-friendly, crystal-blue water - and a view of Falmouth to kill for. Everything about this part of Cornwall is lovely - Veryan, Mevagissy, St Just in Roseland, the King Harry Ferry, the Lost Gardens, Truro, Portscatho, Portloe. I found Vodafone's signal patchy at best - in the van virtually useless - but wifi is excellent and the tv reception good, though we watched virtually none. If you've not been here before, you ought to try it - a haul down, of course, for anybody not in Cornwall, but worth every single mile.

What a Cornish Gem

You can not fault this site, it's super clean, beautifully kept, really friendly wardens, great information hut, shower block clean and tidy at all times, lots of sunny pitches, fabulous play park for the kiddies and great dog field for exercising the hound.  If you want to walk the Roseland Peninsula this is the site for you.  Within 10-15 minutes you are on the coast path.  We found some fabulous places to take refreshments, the Hidden Hut at Porthcernick beach, Boathouse at Porthcatho and then just when you need a cup of tea we came across the Thirstea Van at Porth Beach which was super.  We took the bus to Truro (40 minutes), ok if you want to shop and see the Cathedral and you can pick up a guide that shows you which places are dog friendly - a lot of the shops and cafes are. Falmouth really enjoyed, Pendennis Castle is a good afternoon out and the docks are really interesting, nice lot of shops. Loved going across the King Harry Ferry to the NT Trelissick Gardens - the woodland dog walk is a really good long walk and the views are stunning, lovely gardens (dogs not allowed in the gardens but allowed everywhere else), excellent shop, second hand book shop and cafe, super views of the estuary.  The Roseland is breathtaking coast with super beaches, rocky coves and stunning coastal walks.  We didn't make it to St Anthonys Head (will do that next time).  Would have liked to have visited St Mawes but we ran out of time.  Enjoyed a late lunch at the Rosevine which was very nice - sat out with the dog. If you aren't able to walk there is quite a lot of parking dotted around the peninsula although be prepared to take it slowly as the lanes are quite narrow and you will often come across walkers, horses etc.  We took our pushbikes and whilst there are a lot of really quiet lanes to cycle it is hard going - very hilly in places.  We went over the ferry on our bikes to the NT gardens - it was a massive pedal up hill all the way back but I think it burnt off the cream tea. Wifi is excellent on site, mobile signal for vodaphone is very good and TV not too bad at all.  All in all we had a fantastic trip, we were lucky to have dry weather for the whole time and some lovely sun.  This site is on my list of favourites - although we have loved all of the sites we have visited.  My hubby said to me as we pulled up at site - it's just like coming home, you know exactly what to expect and it's true.... we are so lucky to have the Caravan Club.  We will be back!

It's a long way but worth it.

This is an excellent site, with wardens to match! We had the grass field to ourselves for a week! The other part of the site was about 1/2 full. There is a good childrens play area. Lots to do and explore in the area. There is a cash machine with no charge for withdrawals in the Spar shop at the garage that you pass on the left a few miles from the site.

Merrose in May

Typical Caravan Club site, very clean facilities, all staff very helpful. Local bus stop at entrance which was very handy & always on time. Great restaurant at the Rosevine Hotel about a mile away (beautiful walk). Great food at a reasonable price. Coastal path is about 1/2 mile away, very convenient. Will definitely return to this site.

If you love a harbour town you'll love it.

We had a great stay at Merrose Farm, all the usual standards you'd expect and an added bonus of Radio 2 being on in the toilet block, that was a nice touch. There is a large, fenced in dog walk area on site for your dog to use before you go off exploring. From site you can walk to the top of the drive, cross the road, and walk on the grass and take your first turn down to Curgurrell Farm, they have fresh local sea food, wines, ciders, pies, bread, fruit and veg etc. If you keep walking down past the farm you come to the coastal path, we didn't have time to turn left but if you turn right and keep walking you come to The Hidden Hut, a great spot for lunch (lunch served 12 - 3pm), we had Haddock and Crab Chowder followed by a Cornish Pasty, keep going a little further and you are in Portscatho. Here there is a car park so you can drive and have a few minutes walk to the Hidden Hut if you don't fancy the walk from the site (about an hour). If you walk to the play area on the site, you can walk down the path and onto the bridle path, turn right and keep looking right for signs for the Tregairewoon Farm Kitchen, a farm cafe, serves cream teas, freshly made light meals and cakes and also homemade ready meals for you to warm up in the caravan. Again you can drive to this too. Apparently they do the best Sunday lunch, you have to book, we didn't find out in time to try this. But the big Arga in the kitchen tells me this will be great. If you drive to St Anthony, Gerrans, TR2 5EX there is a little vintage van - The Thirstea Co - selling sandwiches, cream teas, cornish pasties etc and also have a leaflet with two coastal walks you can do from the car park, one shorter one longer. Drive to Mevagissey, lovely harbour town, The Sharksfin seafood restaurant is well worth a visit and dog friendly (as are all things we did I mention here) also pop in the Fountain Inn for a pint too. They do food too and takeaway fish and chips. St Mawes is a little harbour town, has a Co-Op (disposable BBQ's and the usual), The Victory Inn do food and let dogs in, The Rising Sun also for food and let dogs in, the Deli for Cornish Pasties and there is a take away fish and chip shop too, you can also get the passenger ferry from St Mawes. The St Mawes Castle is also worth a visit, dog friendly and a free audio tour included. While we were there we tried the Slice of the West Wood Fired Pizza Co, Saturdays and Wednesdays, signs everywhere, well worth a try. The shop on the site also sells cream teas, cornish pasties, local sausage, bread, milk and accessories. We also took the King Harry Ferry and ended up at The Pandora Inn, again dog friendly and great food. Cash points are few and far between, The Fountain Inn in Mevagissey do cash back. Great place, we didn't have time to explore everywhere the only downside is many beaches aren't dog friendly between May and September. The closest to the site was Pendower Beach, dog friendly after 6pm. The area is well worth a visit. I

A fairly remote Cornish site

A high standard impressive Club site in a lovely area. You ideally need a car to explore the area, or be a Motorhomer who enjoys hiking. The Coastal Path can take you to Portscatho, which doesn't have a lot to offer but does have a Harbour Club which allows visitors. An excellent outdoor Balcony is the main draw. A long walk to Portloe and Veryan is good for hikers. Buses operate from the top of the Site lane, although expect limited service. This Site will be superb on lovely summers days.

Quality CC site

Beautifully maintained site in a most convenient area.Helpful staff and even music in the comfortable and warm shower/toilet block. A good bus service to Truro from the entrance to the site, very handy for motor-caravans.

First ever visit to a club site

Fantastic welcome from Macky on our arrival . When we explained that we had never been to a club site before she was great explaining how the site is laid out and gave us loads of advise . Wonderful location . we used the bus on one day as the bus stop is right at the gate to the site . We had a lovely walk along the coast path to Portscatho stopping at the hidden hut for a well earned coffee on the way. Facilities were spotlessly clean with loads of hot water . We will definitely be back.
