Yet another visit !

This was our second visit this year - the contrast between Storm Katie at Easter and the weather this time in late May being very marked, as we had truly gorgeous weather for all six nights we were here. One of our favourite sites, we have to say that this year the pitches and the site generally looked as good as we've ever seen them - friendly wardens, emerald green grass, beautifully mown, showing off the pitches to perfection. The toilet block - spotlessly clean if perhaps a little dated now - the dog walk area - well placed and a pleasure to use; children's play area well attended; site shop and information booth both excellent. Nearest dog friendly beach is Porthcurnick, just up over the hill (a earlier reviewer obviously didn't know this and it might be an idea to put up a sign in the shop?) though parking is difficult unless you use the public car park on the road to Portscatho - it's also the location of "The Hidden Hut" - which WAS nicely hidden until Caroline Quentin told everyone about it on tv! - and we also discovered that the truly STUNNING beach at Carne is dog-friendly too - in theory you have to leave Fido on a lead between 9am and 6pm but if the dog's in the water, I wouldn't worry - nobody did! I can't think there are two better beaches in Britain for small children, either. St Mawes - picture post-card, a little Hooray-Henry on occasion (it's a very wealthy place) but there's no better place to sit for a pint; the ferry to Falmouth from St Mawes was just fantastic and we loved it. Next time we'll go from Trelissick Gardens (great riverside dog walk) upriver on the ferry to Truro. Try walking out beyond the St Mawes Castle around the headland and you'll find a little gem of a beach right off the car park (you'll have to find the little track to it) - virtually deserted, dog-friendly, crystal-blue water - and a view of Falmouth to kill for. Everything about this part of Cornwall is lovely - Veryan, Mevagissy, St Just in Roseland, the King Harry Ferry, the Lost Gardens, Truro, Portscatho, Portloe. I found Vodafone's signal patchy at best - in the van virtually useless - but wifi is excellent and the tv reception good, though we watched virtually none. If you've not been here before, you ought to try it - a haul down, of course, for anybody not in Cornwall, but worth every single mile.
